Golf

I recently wondered if there had ever been a golf get-together of the FT community.
There are quite a few golf-addicts on FT, e.g. michswiss, arturo, flamboyant 1,...

If possible we should arrange a round of golf.

Everyone who is interested, please post how long you have been playing golf now, your handicap, home course, favourite course and the golf course where a small FT golf championship should take place. I welcome those who invite me to a round on a good private course like Winged Foot, Augusta, Pine Valley, Olympic Club, etc.

To start with myself:

Handicap 2, playing golf since 1991.
Member at: Dsseldorfer Golf Club
Golf Club Haus Bey (also near DUS)
Golf Club de Verbier (Switzerland)

FT tournament could take place at one of my home courses or anywhere it is convenient to get to.

Favourite courses:
Pelican Hill (36 holes, Newport Beach)
Aviara Golf Course
PGA West courses
Ventana Canyon
Troon North
Coeur d'Alene (Idaho, near Spokane though)
many other courses in the Pacific Northwest
Canada:
Jasper Golf Course
Predator Ridge
Greywolf
Glen Abbey
Nicklaus North
Chateau Whistler

Europe:
Evian Golf Club
Chamonix
Valderrama
Old Course

Fancourt, Atlantic Beach, new course at the WesternCape hotel in SA.
Blue Canyon CC in Thailand
Thai Country Club...

great golf at these venues!

I know ElmhurstNick and I tried for a Flyertalker Open once, but we never pulled it off. We should definitely have one.

I'm more like a 10+ handicap, but I go up and down due to all the travel.

Courses I've played recently...

Scottsdale, AZ: TPC & The Boulders
Palos Verdes, CA: Ocean Trails
Long Beach, CA: Eldorado
Newport Beach, CA: Pelican
Malibu, CA: Malibu CC
San Francisco, CA: Lake Merced
Bangkok, TH: Murang Ake
Hermanus, ZA: Arabella
Kruger, ZA: Skukuza

Let me know when you are next in So Cal and we'll play.

I golf like I canoe--from one side to the other. I consider a good game as one where I spend less money on golf balls than I do on greens fees.

That said, I live within 2 blocks of a city course (that I've yet to play), and keep a very old set with friends in Vegas to do par 3's up there (Callaway has a very nice one at the end of an LAS runway).

PHX or LAS anyone?

I'll let you know. The next time I will be in North America will be Aug.1 until Aug.25, primarily in the northwestern states, BC and Alberta.

BTW, how was the Arabella course when you played it ?

I played Arabella in December and it was in fine shape during the early morning.

I just had a thought. The Dubai Classic is going on soon, right? Perhaps we should have a Flyertalk Golf Tourney the week after? There won't be too many tourists down there since most people are afraid of the war with Iraq. But true frequent flyers aren't afraid, right?

I love to play a course right after the pros. You get to try the same shots you just saw on TV.

But Tiger won`t be there and I will not be able to challange his performance the day after his win .
Unfortunately I'll have to work and will only go for skiing two weeks in April. I will update when I know more!

Tiger schmiger. He's just afraid to play Ernie. It seems the Classic is going on now as per http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...pga_dubai_dc_4 and of course Ernie is leading.

Sorry you can't make it. I'll have to see if I can match Ernie by playing from the blue tees. I'm sure I can at least par the 18th.

Golfing in Europe would be a great experince. As far as the US: we could pick a good golfing city like PHX or Myrtle Beach and choose the course later.

Would also be interested, though I also tend to lose alot of golf balls.

Just went to Hilton Head this fall (the Palmetto Dunes course) and would like to go to Myrtle Beach.

Naples is a good place for the FlyerTalker Open. We have 160 golf courses in the area, it's the "Golf Capital of the World"!
Best time would be October, November, December and April; in the peak season (Jan., Feb., March) the courses are crowded or host (PGA and other) tournaments.

That idea is great in order to get things started. In the US I prefer the west coast. Canada has some of the most beautiful courses for a great value. Think of the Okanagen Valley or the area around (just south of) Radium Hot Springs or Kananaskis.

Once more Els lost two a rather unknown and unexperienced pro. I want to see him face to face with Tiger.
Stimpy and all the others:
When I made my golf reservations for the summer in the US and Canada, I'll post them here and look if anyone wants to join.
From April 12-25 I will be in Switzerland playing in Lausanne, Domaine Imperial (best course in Switzerland, Montreux, Geneve, Evian (very nice!). I am flexible with the dates, prefer not to play there on weekends because it is so full then.
Anyone keen on a good match ?

I've now reached the point where the number of years I've been playing almost matches my handicap (25)...

My vote for an inexpensive but beautiful place to play would be Kanakaskis outside of Banff, and the place where I'd like to go play and never have is Bermuda.

Im up for it as I try to play as much as I can when Im traveling. Im a 13 handicap.
Just three weeks ago I played Torrey Pines (that rough was rough!) and then on a recent trip to MIA I played Doral (sand trap city!). Count me in for any golf gathering.

I'm about a 13 handicapper, and play out of the Dubuque Golf & Country Club here in Dubuque.

I'd be up for something, assuming it is within reasonable travel distance.

Just let me know!!!
