Pretty late in the game, I know, but I'd like to add my name to the (still-growing) list of candidates.
I've got the time, I've been to all seven continents, and I've got the wherewithal to fend for myself and the glory of FlyerTalk....
I don't know how we'll winnow the list from its current size, but here's one thought -- everyone serious enough to consider him or herself a candidate ought to put up a $100 "application fee" for the privilege.
(This will serve a dual function -- narrowing the list to serious folks, and raising much-needed funding...)
The clock's a-tickin', kids....

Oh, and at the risk of submarining my own chances, maybe (since FT is bankrolling a good-sized chunk of this shindig) one significant factor in choosing the two team members ought to be:
length-of-membership in FlyerTalk itself, or
number of posts, or
having been a member of a TalkBoard?
And, at the risk of discriminating based on net worth...
Since we seem to be about $9500 short of our $20K goal at the moment, maybe we should consider auctioning the spots -- once we narrow the field to a manageable list of genuine possibilities, we could begin the bidding at, say, $1000...and work our way up from there?

Great Idea!
No doubt that the FT team will CRUSH any opposition. Too bad Premex can't make it, he would be my first choice. Can't do it personally, but I'm willing to pony up some $$ to make it happen.

There are likely four scenarios at work here:
1. Randy decides to kick in $10K and each team member is on the hook for about $7500 ($5000 in registration, about $2500 in expense money)
2. Randy kicks in $10K and the FT Community contributes $5K, roughly 50% of balance of registration fee. Each team member responsible for about $5000 ($2500 registration fee and $2500 expense money)
3. Randy kicks in $10K and successfully solicits the FT Community to contribute $10K, the balance of the registration fee. Each team member on the hook for $2500 in expense money.
4. Randy kicks in $10K and FT Community contributes $15K, registration fee and expense money. Each team member has no financial commitment.
Obviously, scenario 4 allows all 40 on the list to remain viable candidates. Scenario 1 will severely whittle down the list! Scenarios 2 and 3 are really a function of how much time Randy can commit to prepping and rolling out an FT Community 'appeal' on short notice with a tight turnaround.
I hope that this post provides Randy and the Team FT prospects a reasonable reality check.
Beyond the money, it would certainly be instructive to make sure that you are totally available time-wise available Oct 18-Nov 10. If those dates aren't a slamdunk at this stage, it would probably be helpful to withdraw your name from consideration....again making the prospect list more workable for Randy.
Disclaimer- Yes, I am a legit prospect, so it is indeed self-serving to propel this process forward. But, I trust my effort does in fact, serve an overall good as well!

I'm also interested. I flew with Randy and MilesRUs on our 3-day LatinPass challenge as well as did 7 different 100k runs for OneWorld in 6 days (one for each of 7 airlines!!) in '99.
One of my majors in undergrad was Spanish. Minor was Russian. I studied French intensively after undergrad and a bit of German in grad school. My girlfriend is Indian and am picking up some Bengali.
I have the time and would love to do it...and I am young. I am willing to put up money either way just to see this team win!

Hmm. I would love to do this (and have the time/ability), but not having been able to find much information I'm not sure what qualitifications should really be important.
This doesn't sound like we're racing from Ritz-Carlton to Starwood and fighting over upgrades, so I somehow doubt that status will be terribly important to success.
It also seems to be more physically challenging than just "travelling a lot" -- if we're hiking for 4 days through rain forest and then riding a donkey for a week while sleeping on dirt, that's very different than enduring a 14-hour Z-class seat on Air India.
I'm eminently qualified for a camel race, less so for anything that requires an Amex Centurion. I would agree that deciding what qualifications are important should be one of the first steps.
I'll certainly sponsor regardless -- it sounds like a great project and I've done work with Physicians sans Frontiers before in Africa, so they're good guys who desrve lots of support.

To clarify .... I meant pretty good odds (about 50 to 1) of being sent on a fabulous all expenses paid world $25,000 travel adventure - all for a $100 non-refundable 'entry fee'.
What do those on the list so far think of the idea? The "lottery" aspect ensures that personalities/politics etc do not come into play.
