DFW 2/21 - 2/23/03 - SAVE THE DATE!

Okay... we've kicked the idea around of doing a second DFW do. The first one was great, despite being held only two weeks after 9/11, but we're hoping for an even better showing for a second do.

We wanted to get this down on the calendar now so we would have a date marked. PeachesBB will be my co-host and bollar will be our honorary co-host (as immediate past host). I'm hoping a couple more DFW FTers are gonna step up to the plate and be our on planning committee too. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Last time, we were focused on stuff specifically around DFW airport... save for aviation-related stuff and lots of hotels (and Casa de Techgirl), there isn't much else to do there however. This time, we would like to focus our planning on either Dallas proper or Fort Worth proper.

(edited to add that we picked Fort Worth over Dallas) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Fort Worth has a nice downtown shopping/restaurant district, several museums, and the Stockyards historic district all within a few minutes of each other.

The city will require a car or some type of transport assistance... we'll start working on a list of suggested hotels and possible shuttle service to the main events so everyone isn't out on the road.

DFW folks who are interested in helping plan, please e-mail me.

Oooh, I am the first to RSVP! Do I get a prize? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I012609 Aug 22, 2002 3:38 pm

I'm right behind you Masha!

techgirl - no real preference on Dallas or Fort Worth. I've spent a lot of time in Dallas in the past but very little time in FW, so I wouldn't mind getting to explore it a bit.

Wow! If we both sleep where I slept on my last trip to DFW, we are gonna need to hook up that webcam for sure. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Um... I was planning for this to be a PG-13 rated DO, girlies. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

PeachesBB Aug 22, 2002 4:35 pm

It's ALL techgirl's idea, but as a co-host of this event, I feel it is my duty to notify all potential attendees that there will be a night of karaoke, regardless of what city we end up in.

There. You have all been warned. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

You always say that...

newself Aug 22, 2002 4:52 pm

There ain't enuff booze in Texas to get me to sing karaoke, but I will be there never-the-less!

Matthew Vandamm Aug 22, 2002 5:22 pm

I believe I am in Dallas for two weeks, including those dates, so mark me down as a probable, plus two other guys from my training course.

Is it ok if they cover my Karoke? They both love to sing, so I would like to give them my turn(s)

Starwood Lurker Aug 22, 2002 5:23 pm

I'll put this on the calendar, techgirl. If Mrs. Starwood Lurker and myself can break away for some of the events, I'll let you know a little closer to the date.

Anyone else see the irony that this isn't listed in the Unofficial, Unsanctioned Get Together Index?

It's not just you, chexy, I was just afraid to mention it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Beckles Aug 22, 2002 6:36 pm

Looks like you're actually going to trick more people into coming to Texas than you did last time ... of course I'll try and come, but seeing that it is 7 months away, it's kind of hard to committ for sure ... Guess I could just confirm and pull a geo ...

I don't want anyone to have the expectation that I'm gonna update in real-time... but I'm headed over right now to add new events and delete the ones that were today. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Does this make chexy a maybe?

Well, it's nice to see this gathering FINALLY get a sequel. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And you remembered that I retired from this business, although I will uphold my promise to be a consultant.

As the originator of the first gathering and the other co-host (points that techgirl forgot to mention, because she's ignoring me because I live in Dallas http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif), I do want to stress to the DFW area FT'ers that this takes a lot of effort on the part of the hosts. The more of you who can pitch in with ideas, help, etc, to back the hosts up, the better! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Why, pray tell, isn't Lubbock an option? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Would love to confirm, but geez, Jen, 5 months out? I don't even know where I'm going to be in five hours...can I go on the "might flake out/might not" list for now?

Well DUH, Sluggie dearheart...

The third weekend in February was always the weekend of Pikefest... hotels in LBB would be a bit difficult to come by for what was billed as the world's largest Frat Party when I was in college.

(Then again, what would I know... I haven't been in years. I'm not even sure if they still HAVE Pikefest. I'll have to ask some of my younger cohorts who have lived in Lubbock more recently than me....)

newself Aug 23, 2002 7:26 am

Why Lubbuck, how about Sulphur Springs or Beaumont/Pt Arthur? Those are high quality party towns! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

ps: Since I have't been to either Dallas nor Fort Worth, I will let you choose.

greggwiggins Aug 23, 2002 7:32 am

After reading just the first seven posts here, I knew this clearly is an event I should plan to attend if at all possible.

So please include me as "tentative but probable."

(Are basses allowed to sing karaoke?)

Hm, can we at least stop by? I am sure I can think of a way to 'come by' a hotel room once we are there. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Spiff Aug 23, 2002 8:02 am

Most of my visits to the DFW area have been mostly to big D and not much to the FW side of town... But either way, I'd love to attend!

jan_az Aug 23, 2002 9:03 am

Well considering my last hotel experience in dear ole Lubbock http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif - I vote for Fort Worth

I used to say the same thing. Trust me, enough Texas-Size shots, and you will not only be willing to bust out with some "Oops, I Did It Again", but will probably be leading the dance train around the room while you do it.

Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

techgirl Aug 23, 2002 9:06 am

Okay.... chatted with my co-hosts and we've decided since there have been no strong votes for Dallas that we will be doing this in Fort Worth.

We already have the locations in mind for Friday's activity and Saturday's dinner and activity.

Within the next three or four weeks, we will get a new thread up which will have specifics about hotel options, transportation options (we are gonna work on some type of shuttle to specific hotels so the Starwood and Hilton folks can have that option), and maybe even the locations for activities...

... but in the meantime, keep posting here so we can get a tentative list going.

(Oh, and studley and DFWTripGuy - consider yourselves officially recruited!)

swag Aug 23, 2002 9:15 am

I have this penciled in. And I can help out if needed.

ElmhurstNick Aug 23, 2002 9:38 am

Put me on the definite maybe list, although I might have to fly out of MDW to get a decent hub-to-hub airfare.

PETEFLYS Aug 23, 2002 3:24 pm

You can count me in for this event. I will also help in anyway you would like Techgirl.
See you in SIN.
I would have voted for Dallas, but Ft.Worth it shall be.

paradocs Aug 23, 2002 3:29 pm

Techgirl, put me down as probable please. Glad you are doing this! And I need to visit my mother in FT. W.

Downtown FT. W. is terrific now and I think is the best choice. Are we going to eat at Joe T's?

LBB..."Hotels"... with an "s"...plural? Where's the other one?

Good call on FW. Would've been my vote anyway. Anything a guy who a) doesn't live in DFW but lives semi-close and b) is never where he lives anyway, can do to help out, let me know.

And Missy, I took 520 back and forth today. Took me 25 minutes each time. Total. See what happens when I don't listen to you? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif

Actually ... not sure if I can make it or not now ... already ...

stupid season tickets to the opera ...

Might be able to switch my tickets to Thursday night or the Sunday matinee instead from Saturday night ...

I012609 Aug 24, 2002 12:49 am

Oh come on now Tom!!!!

I'm sorry, which sounds like more fun?...

ChaseTheMiles Aug 24, 2002 7:18 am

techgirl, thanks for a great idea!

Please count me in as a maybe (just in case I have a schedule conflict.) I want to help! Please let me know what I can do.

BTW, I'd like to suggest the Dart Rail ride to downtown Ft. Worth (it starts from downtown Dallas and stops over at DFW-Centreport) if anyone doesn't want to drive the long distance. I tried it for a night out and really enjoyed it.

I think I heard someone mention Billy Bob's Honky Tonk at the stockyards on a BUSY night? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

After our recent Monday night fizzer there, please add Joh and I as definite maybes.

robb Aug 24, 2002 11:55 am

Well, I have to say I'd much rather do karaoke in Ft Worth where there's far less chance I'll run into someone I know!

I haven't been to Joe T.'s in 15 years. How has it held up? Is it still a great spot or has fame and notoriety gone to its head?

I'm in on the probable list.
