Sorry, I know this is not strictly community related, but I think the most people will see it if it is posted here...

I just received 2 email-based viruses: one to my FT profile email address, and another to the other email address that is listed in my FT profile.

I use pine to read my email, so I don't have to worry about it executing the virus code, so I took a closer look at the 2 emails.

Upon reading the headers, both were actually sent from the [email protected] and the IP 12.87.97.228 (228.detroit13rh16rt.mi.dial-access.att.net). So, if that's you, please disinfect your machine immediately!

As usual, just a general caution, this may be a different type of virus since i doubt anyone would have both of my email addresses in their address book.

In closing. If you MUST use Outlook, please please please be careful. And, as always, don't open files from people you don't know!

Long live Norton! I just received an infected email from the same user.

It was sent to a Tarom.net account I've never used so I presume someone on FT has an infection. It's astounding that there are still users out there without decent virus protection

Mark, do the newer versions of Outlook (ie. the ones with Win XP Professional) still have the same weakness you mention?

EVERY version of Outlook is fair game. If you're not running virus protection, RUN, don't walk to http://www.symantec.com and download Norton Antivirus. I prefer the enterprise edition for the cleaner interface and management functions but the consumer version is just as effective.

It's always funny to get infected mail and only see the source code displayed, but not executed!

Thanks for the heads up Markbach. FT'ers receiving viruses from Michigan to their private FT accounts? Now that does seem rather co-incidental.

If they are using a WorldNet account I suppose they will not have that too long given recent NYSE events?

My antivirus has bounced two different emails today containing viruses - I used to like to look at the email to see who it came from - now I just reject them at the door.

Remember to update your virus definitions either automatically or manually, but frequently! And if you're using Outlook, DON'T use preview pane!!

Glen -- And what does AT&T WorldNet service have to do with Worldcom (which, btw, trades on Nasdaq, not NYSE)?

Eugene .. absolutely nothing it seems. My error. Neither company operates here, and I got them confused as the names are very similar. My only email account ISP is ozemail, business and private (the 1st oz company to list on Nasdaq actually) which I have used for 7 years, and who (sadly) are 100% owned by WorldCom. So I do not even want to think about the massive headaches ahead if they fold.

It's stopped stuff that Mcafee missed. With it and Zone Alarm working together I've never had a virus infection.

Or just use pine as Mark initially alluded to. I too got the same crap sent to me, and I use HostExplorer+pine to read my mail.

Outlook XP is immune to the Klez virus. However, you may still receive copies of infected emails, which you may simply delete.

Here is what Microsoft has to say about prevention:
