Cheezwit and Krimpets (Philly Cheesesteaks and Tastykakes)
Ok, so, a certain chatter has embarrassed him/herself by NEVER having been to Philadelphia, and not knowing what a Tastykake is, or what Pat's and Geno's are...
So, we need to have a second annual Philadelphia cheesesteak event. I'm open to just about any dates, when is good for everyone else? I figure we'll compare Pat's and Geno's (even though there in no comparison to PAT'S), and maybe get some pretzels and tastykakes afterwards. Then we can work off the 1000's of calories by running up and down the art museum steps a few times. Yo, Adrian, who's in? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
I'm in, but I won't eat anything at Geno's!!!
I think someone suggested Feb/Mar and something about catching a Sixers game. There's a ton of other stuff to do to like do the Rocky run, but I'm not in shape for that. |
So now that I've been outed publicly for my ignorance of all things Philly...I'm in..someone pick a date.

missy: i wasn't even talking about you...
BTW: Here are some pics from the last event... http://chexfan.tripod.com/cheesesteak.html |
Not Pat's and Geno's in winter! Last time we were there we stood in the freezing rain (nearly snow) in March, eating cheesteaks. Ack. No indoor sit down, no bathroom. I know it is part of its charm but not in March, Feb, Jan...Just call me a converted CA wuss.
Anyone remember Luigi's in Willow Grove??? Now, that was the best. But gone...Or hoagies at Jean's near Lincoln HI? Still there. |
You can't enjoy Pats unless you have to stand in the freezing cold (no snow, no sleet though!) to get it. It warms you up like nothing else on this earth. Umm... goooey cheese....
I vote February sometime. |
No contest- Pats wins.
|
Forget Geno's and forget the Krimpets. Go for Pat's and finish it off with a Frank's soda (hey, I haven't lived in the Philly area for 19 years...is Frank's soda still around?) and have a Peanut Butter TandyKake for desert.

Yes MA, Frank's soda is still around...and though I like Pat's & Geno's, there is another place that is better.
Fat Edna's in Manyunk may have the best Cheesesteak of all. If you want to sit down to eat, go to Jim's on South Street (corner of 4th I think). Depending on the dates selected, I'll sure try to get to this one... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
Quick Thoughts:
Does Pat's or Geno's taste good if it is before 11:30p? Mmmm... cheeeesefries! Of course there was the first FlyerTalk Cheesesteak Tasting: http://chexfan.tripod.com/cheesesteak.html shadow- I am quite impressed with your nod to the corner bar, FatEdna's. Although I must say that their Chicken Cheesesteaks were the best anywhere, I have to let you know that their management changed hands in Oct. '00 and when I went back to visit in June, things just didn't taste the same http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif |
What is a tastykake?

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by Ling: What is a tastykake?</font> http://www.tastykake.com/ They are a fine, tasty snacktime treat. Some would say that the proof of God loving humans lies in the presence of Tastykakes. |
MarkBach, Philly is a fun town. I have been there with friends and was introduced to the city by Dr. Burkey when he hosted a Do there long ago. (I think that was teh first time I met the esteeemed Dgolds.)
As a party planner, here's what I propose: *Have those interested throw out 2 or 3 best dates. Like, what's best for me... *Mid march *late March *Mid April (early is out and late is the Freddies) *Narrow it down to one or two dates, a definite and an alternate. *Then start planning. And the big thing: TRY NOT TO HAVE IT COMFLINCT WITH ANTOHER EVENT! People are goign to ahve to choose between events. Except the Catman Dos http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif Like second week of February: Rudi's event for the Carnival? (I don't know what this event is since I can't go! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif ) If you want some suggestions, e-mail me or read how I planned the catman Do 3. There are also good museums there and I alwasy wanted to do a museum run! : ANd run up the steps of the Philly Museum of Art (where Rocky ran up the steps in his movie.) AGAIN! Loved doing it last summer! Good Luck. OMNI: I guess teh Official supermarket sold snack foods: *Entenmann's. *TastyCakes *Drakes Cakes (remember Drake the Duck!) I wish I could figure out where I was for the first event... I would surely have gone. And I certainly join the majority opinion here about Pat's. I have been to Pat's in all manner of weather... it's better in the freezing cold... I've even been there on Christmas Eve... and I've never even lived in Philly. I have an odd approach to Pat's menu. I can't stand the cheeze whiz... maybe a little provolone... but usually I'm very happy with steak, sauce, onions, hot peppers, and no cheese at all.
Someone mentioned "Tandycakes". It's "Tastycakes". Tandycakes are something you buy at Radio Shack to clog up your VCR. So I vote for February also. [This message has been edited by RichG (edited 10-24-2001).] |
Ling...never heard of Tastycakes? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
Missy, that's cheesesteak, NOT cheese Cake! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Markbach, maybe we can get the sandwiches to go and eat them at PHL. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Maybe 1 day in December, when I'm not busy, we can do a 'practice' run. Yum. Dan |
