I must admit that I was not aware of Pat's or Geno's specifically - it's been about six years since I was last in PHL, and about eight since I had a day to goof around there. I do remember that I had an excellent cheesesteak at a place near the Liberty Bell.
I'd be up for a Saturday February event with sufficient notice. |
IF we do it in February, please let's do it Second week of February or End of February.
My station is moving the last week of January and I don't know if my weekends will be cancelled for training and other stuff. The third weekend i'm away. Like to do this maybe second weekend of February. OR 1st weekend of march would be ideal. |
Originally posted by Catman: IF we do it in February, please let's do it Second week of February... Here's what I'm looking at planning for the weekend...[list][*] Cheesesteaks and Tastykakes (saturday dinner)[*] A "formal" meal (either lunch or dinner)[*] Possible tour of USAirways facilities or PHL Airport[*] Philadelphia Zoo[*] trip to Lancaster for outlet shopping[*] Longwood Gardens / Winterthur in Delaware[*] Walking Tour of Philaphia (Liberty Bell, Independance Hall, Reading Terminal Market, etc.[*] Nightclubs/bars on Delaware Waterfront Since this is getting to be a event that is much larger than a half-dozen people eating cheesesteaks, I would like some co-organizers, if you're willing to help, please email me (Dan Hammer, you're already elected to the committee http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ) |
Mark, that was the weekend i was considering.
I figure if we move on our target date of 1-26th we should be settled in by the second week of February. Then I can take off for the weekend. Suggestion: keep the scheduled events as few as possible. Consider the Catman DO Trois: *one optional bar night *one main dinner (everyone attends) *one brunch. Everyone did their own thing. People can break off like some did with Dandy Dan the Tour Guy Man to visit Brooklyn. One more suggestion: a museum tour (for those inclinded.) I can't really help with logistics but I would maybe ask any local philly fliers for help. Good luck Mark. |
First, I'm sorry to say I can't make the 2/9-10 weekend in Philly as I am heading to SLC for some Olympic events.
But some quick thoughts as a formr Philadelphian:[*]There is plenty of stuff to do in the city that planning a trip to Lancaster would be silly. There's always King Of Prussia mall if someone needs to shop.[*]Walking Tours are a good idea as there is alot to see, but remember February is cold![*]The Museum of Art offers free admission on sundays before noon, or maybe all day. (I would go over there occasionally after an early morning row to wonder in amazement in the Weapons and Armor room!)[*]IMHO the zoo is overrated.[*]I'm not too sure many, if any, FTers would be interested in hitting Delaware Ave. I'd think some Olde City or Manayunk bars would be more their speed. |
Mark,
That weekend is TOY FAIR. Maybe someone can 'deliver' a Philly cheesesteak to me in NY. And of course I'm willing to trade toys for such a lovely gift. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Dan |

Will you go for Gold or have to settle for Silver or Bronze medals? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
I grew up right outside of Philly.
Bryn Mawr Pizza has great cheesesteaks. You can stop in on the way out to Lancaster. If I recall Reading has a lot of the outlet places too. Amish quilts is always a hit. Take the group through Intercourse. That should give FT folks plenty to talk about. Last bit of good news. Tom Thumb here in Dallas now carries TastyKake. Ah, the fond memories that come back while eating one. Frank ------------------ TANSTAASFL - but if you work it right, FF miles comes pretty close. |

But ewwww--on the Schuykill River? |
February 9th is the NBA All-Star game in Philadelphia, a few hotels that i sampled are showed sold out or near rack rate for that weekend.
I'll work on finding another weekend, probably 2/23 or March 2nd or 9th. Preferences, anyone? |
2/23 - a three-day weekend for many folks, means that they can either go up to NYC or down to DC as well as seeing Philly.
3/2 or 3/14 starts getting too close to the potential Catman Do 4 dates, assuming that Catman will be doing that again this year. |

Hey, Elmhurst Nick. I'm kinda new to all this. Sounds like we should do something like this in Chicago with Italian Beef (if it hasn't already been done). Maybe the extra room at Mr. Beef on a Saturday afternoon. (Please don't tell me you prefer Al's.)
