hints on reducing cost of convertible rental
I have some German friends who want to rent a convertible in New Orleans for a week and then on the west coast for 2 or 3 weeks. The prices for convertibles are quite high. Myself I am used to just renting whatever is least expensive as I have little reason to be picky about what kind of car I drive. I notice the coupons in my collection all exclude the car type for convertible. Does anyone have ideas from past experience on where to find a discount or a deal on renting a convertible? Any input is appreciated.

Wormwood,
I have friends who have actually had pretty good success with Priceline.com and hotwire.com for convertibles.
I personally have never tried to get a car on either site. Not sure if you can book on these sites from Germany.

I second wharvey's priceline recommendation. I successfully bid (first round too) for a convertible for $18/day @ LIH over the X'mas holiday period. The car was supplied by National and its web site wanted >2x that (exc. tax!). You can get around the U.S.-only restriction by using any U.S. address.

Priceline also worked great for me in LIH in October, but not as well as for terenz -- I paid $22/day for a convertible with Alamo (less than their internet rate for a subcompact).
