Question on NWA
I realize that this may not be the place for this type of question by I need some advice.I just recently purchased a a wheeled carry-on that is 20 inches. I measured the outside and it measures 22 inches from the wheels to the top. I was wondering first how NWA measures the bag so that it is 22 by 9 by 14. Width and depth I am okay on. I am flying to Detroit and from Detroit to Paris. On the NWA website they state on international flights that restrictions on carry-ons can vary. Anyone with any advice or previous experience would be very helpful
P.S. I have heard that NWA has a liberal carry-on policy, is this true?
Thank you,
Sinjin

Below is the link to the NW policy on carry-on luggage from their website. I've taken 4 roundtrips/16 segments on Northwest and from the lack of overhead space for my bags each time I would agree with the liberal comment. Since your trip is international the website does say you only get to have one carry-on while other US carriers allow two. I imagine this is because of the close relationship with KLM. By the way, welcome to Flyertalk.

My only comment is that NW International FAs tend to be particularly nasty in determining what one can and cannot carry on board. Elite status, first to board, etc appears to have no bearing. The individual standing at the door tends to force one to check carry on baggage that is within their own standards with no discernable reason, simply because they want to. It is wise to go with the expectation that you will be forced to check a carry-on at the door.
This policy is one reason why I avoid NW whenever possible.

sinjin,
You don't say whether you have status with NW or if you are traveling Business or Economy, so this may or may not apply. My travel is almost exclusively Trans-Pacific. I have both a 22" and a 24" roll-on. (Samsonite) I always travel Business Class and both will fit in the overhead storage bin. I have never been confronted by an FA on NW. This might be due to my status (Platinum) or my WBC ticket.

The 22 inches dimension should be ok. The DC10s have sizable bins, especially in the middle. If that is your only bag, make your strategy to be in the first part of the economy class horde to board--go up with the business class horde and then stand aside at the gate until economy is called.
