Im based in sydney.Anyone comin on down for the Olympics. If so Ill arrange a get together here.Dates 15th sept to 1st Oct.Has anyone got tickets to anything
?

ozstamps Jul 21, 2000 5:20 pm

He, He. I booked cheap backload tickets on United to get OUTTA Sydney for most of that period! Sorry but I'll be in USA and Mexico Sept 17/27.

spartacus Jul 22, 2000 5:40 am

Sydney, Olympics, aah...
...Don't know if I would get out of King's Cross until the sun comes up http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Wish I could come, but couldn't work a timeshare trade, none in SYD or close enough to be practical http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

If something changes, I'll send you a smoke signal.

ozstamps Jul 22, 2000 9:06 am

I can believe that. Cruddy suburban houses are being offered for rent at $4 billion or whatever a day. Hotels are about 4 x rack rate for rooms the rats passed over. Accom. will be NUTS to obtain sadly.

tinkybelle Jul 23, 2000 5:57 pm

Ozstamps.
i cant believe anyone would get outa this town when half the world WANTS to be here.

ozstamps Jul 23, 2000 10:25 pm

Tinkerbelle - Repeat that line to me when you are hot, and gridlocked in a 20 mile traffic jam on Parramatta Road for 3 hours any given afternoon, whilst I am on a 4 lane free flowing Interstate in Utah!

I'll watch the highlights on CNN!

Bambam Jul 24, 2000 2:07 pm

tinkybelle,

Myself and my girlfriend will be travelling from probably rainy Juneau Alaska to hopefully sunnier and warmer Sydney to view the first week of the Olympics. We bought into a air/hotel/ground trans/event tickets package so not sure how much free time we will have there.

I have been looking forward to this ever since Sydney was awarded the games. With the cost, we will only be able to see Sydney and then 3 days in Melbourne, but it will probably just wet my appetite so I have to come back when there aren't mobs of people.

Randy Petersen Jul 24, 2000 4:16 pm

I may be in the city down under at the beginning of Sept to visit Qantas and Ansett....for a look defore it gets too busy. So if that will work for anyone, count me in.......

student Jul 25, 2000 7:45 am

I am coming to Sydney for the Olympics and my honeymoon I arrive in OZ on the 21 of Sept but am heading to Gold coast first. I'll be in Sydney Sept 23 until the 26th then to Cairn and then back in Sydney on the 29th until October 1st. If other Flyertalkers are there I loved to try and get together.

ozstamps Jul 25, 2000 7:56 am

Student .. here is the Honeymoon deal for you .. Cairns to LAX round trip on CO for $US345! (Via Guam and Honolulu. What a Honeymoon!) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum20/HTML/001060.html

doc Jul 25, 2000 12:26 pm

Thought you had/have to originate from AUS for this fare, no?

Eugene Jul 25, 2000 12:29 pm

You are absolutely correct, doc.

ozstamps Jul 25, 2000 12:55 pm

They are going to Cairns. It is all a question of coupon pulling involved here!

Eugene Jul 25, 2000 1:11 pm

$345 (which now dropped to $340, BTW http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ) fare (VKPEX1MC) requires origination in CNS. Open return is not allowed, and dates cannot be changed, so what kind of "coupon pulling" would let you go around those restrictions?

Besides everything else, this fare requires a minimum of 5 days stay, therefore it won't work for student's itinerary.

Bambam Jul 27, 2000 12:39 pm

tinkybelle or ozstamps,

While in Sydney and Melbourne for my Olympics trip in September I will be doing all I can to not be the idiotic tourist. To help, I have read several travel books and visited many web sites to gather information on your cities/country. Any pearls of wisdom that either of you can pass on to me??? Words/gestures/phrases which might have a very different meaning to Australians that will get me laughed at/beat up/put in jail??

When tourists come to my hometown, Juneau, many get off the cruise ships and ask what elevation they are at. As you look over the edge of the dock at the ocean, the common answer is "How tall are you?" before you start laughing.

Thanks in advance.

PremEx Jul 27, 2000 1:56 pm

I remember when they predicted traffic gridlock, crowds everywhere, parking problems, etc. for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. So many locals left town that it turned out to be one of the greatest times to be in LA...empty freeways, upfront parking everywhere, restaurants begging for business...heck, even Disneyland practically went out of business due to lack of tourists!

ozstamps Jul 27, 2000 7:18 pm

BamBam .. there are like in all English speaking countries, words that mean VERY different things to other places, despite us all allegedly speaking the same mother tongue. There are many entire books on "Australian English". Try:
http://www.gleebooks.com.au

Innocent expressions you might make like commenting some woman has a large fanny or saying you are rooting for someone have VERY different meanings locally!

Hope you enjoy the visit!

tinkybelle Jul 28, 2000 5:10 am

Randy and BamBam look foreward to meeting you. Ozstamps. im glad youll be outa here as you may embarass us real ozzies.Premex. I love your comments youre always RIGHT as you are now the real groovers and movers will rock on down parramatta road marvelling in the joy the rest of the world have a being in this fabulous land. Australia Australia

Bambam Jul 28, 2000 2:20 pm

ozstamps-Thanks for the headsup on the terms. Things like that can definitely cause problems.

As soon as we find out what hotel we will be staying in, I will probably hit you and tinkybelle up for info on sites to see and things to do. We had planned to go the opening ceremonies, but the only tickets available were $1054 each, so we now have most of the 14th and all of the 15th to wander around.

Thanks
Brad

I'm tentatively in Sydney for the swimming events (Sept 16-23)..but my friend, who is a U.S. swimmer, needs to make the team first for me to commit (she was at World Cup in Paris and Italy this past winter, and I was over for those, too, so she has a very good chance to get a slot).

Trials here are in Indianapolis Aug 9-16 (I'll be there). Have accommodations set up with friends a couple train stops over the Harbour Bridge if she continues on to Syndey.

I have award tickets, arriving Melbourne on Sept 9, and home from Sydney Oct 15. I booked these back around last November.

Tom

spartacus Jul 30, 2000 3:30 am

Student,

If you haven't already committed...
In Cairns I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Colonial Resort. Stayed there in 94 and it was simply incredible. It was also a lot calmer flying LAX to CNS instead of Sydney or Brisbane, which we did later in tandem.

Bambam Aug 9, 2000 11:25 am

Well, it is now 30 days and counting until we leave Juneau for our final destination of Sydney for the first week of the Olympics. In reading several web sites about the games, I was really pleased to see the comment from one protester that visitors would be greeted by burning cars and buildings, or something like that. Glad to see that he had backed off and now claims to be pushing for non-violent protest.

Found out we are staying in the Crest Hotel, which was previously known as the Capital. Is it a good thing that the name of your hotel changes from the time you make your reservation until the time you get there? From the info it looks to be a nice hotel and contains relaxation centers with Korean ginseng baths. Not sure if that means bathing in ginseng juice, bathing in water with ginseng in it or if I have to eat ginseng while bathing. The hotel looks close to everything, but from recent large protests, this may not be the best thing.

"Excuse me, I need to book a ticket to Seattle for the WTO meeting. And I'll need a hotel downtown, because I heard that's where all the action will be."

Joking aside, I am looking forward to this trip a great deal and while protesters are to be expected, I only hope that they don't overshadow the games.

The Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council in Sydney has applied for police permission to create a human chain outside Sydney Airport in the five days leading up to the Olympics.

The land council, known as Metro, also notified police it would like to march on the Sydney office of Prime Minister John Howard on September 15, the day of the opening ceremony. Metro march organizer Lyall Munro said today the applications were simply a matter of protocol, and he was confident the protests will happen.

ozstamps Aug 9, 2000 7:41 pm

Doc .. I sadly think what you posted will be the tiniest tip of the tiniest iceberg with regard to Aboriginal based activism, and with LOTS of non-aboriginals joining in.

I am not commenting whether this is right or wrong, and whether I agree with it or not, it is simply a fact. The world media being camped in this place for a few weeks is going to give that line of protest a world stage to appeal to.

BAMBAM .. finally got my flights all locked in, Out Sept 17, to home from USA/Mexico Sept 27.

I you or others wanna catch up 14th or whatever day you get in, be happy to try and get a firm drink/dinner date for any FT'ers etc together.

The weather will be different from Juneau, thats for sure! Last time I was in Alaska, went right up to Point Barrow, the nothernmost point of the USA! Report on that here:

http://www.ozemail.com.au/~ozstamps//alaska.htm

ozstamps Aug 9, 2000 9:46 pm

United claim they WILL get the USA Olympic team to OZ despite all the flight delays they are suffering lately!

ozstamps Aug 12, 2000 8:50 pm

And for anyone wanting to fly around cheap .. look at this:

Qantas Offer $US18 fares In Australia. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Qantas immediately matched this new deep discount.

Virgin Blue are expected to launch with $A20 fares (=$US12)

Great news for anyone visiting "downunder" around the Olympics!

http://www.smh.com.au/news/0008/13/sunday/news3.html

ozstamps Aug 13, 2000 12:08 am

My error ... $A33 comes out more like $19, not $US18!

I am reading today's (Sunday) newspaper.

There are 7,000 hotel rooms still available during the Olympics. All the "experts" had predicted a total oversold situation.

Still TWO MILLION EVENT TICKETS UNSOLD.

SOCOG is placing back onto the open market its block bookings of berths on the luxury liner Nieuw Amesterdam whih wil be moored in the harbor.

There are NO discounted "back fill" tickets outta town to Europe, or basically anywhere else. (Thank Gawd I booked mine when I did!)

The Qantas group general sales manager says in same article this will not happen. He says it is almost impossible to locate a revenue ticket out of Australia at ANY price right now. There will be no cheapie back fill deals.

"The Olympics are the worse thing that's happened to real estate here" said a principal of a leading real estate company.

Houses leased for $28,000 a week have had their contracts cancelled.

So, anyone out there reading this that plans to come on down ... start booking NOW!

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

STOP PRESS ... Ansett also just matched the $19 fares!

Well we'll post a meet here corner by 1st Sept so all get out your diaries. I spose someone should get the F/F points at a Sheraton hilton or Hyatt!!!. so who needs em?

Bambam Aug 28, 2000 2:19 pm

ozstamps/tinkybelle,

Sorry I haven't responded sooner but had family in town and didn't have much free time between fishing, whale watching and several dinners out.

If either or both of you are free the evening of the 14th, we would enjoy meeting you for dinner/drinks somewhere near the Crest Hotel. Nothing fancy, but would be nice to sample some local fare.

I'll be in Sydney's CBD 8 Sept through 3 Oct. Come on down, ya'll. My client has a HUGE surplus of CBD four-star rooms and sponsor-quality event tickets she'll liquidate at cost or less. From my experience at several past Olympics, I assure you that traffic on Parramatta will be less than every-day rush hour. Sydneysiders will be so scared by predictions of gridlock that they'll stay indoors or fly to Orlando for the fortnight.

janejet Aug 31, 2000 5:05 pm

My boss is flying over for the Olympics and just got a downtown hotel at half in american currency what he was quoted about 3 months ago. Prices have dropped considerably it seems.

Evening of 14th Sept sounds fine with me Bambam - how about 0524 and Tinkybelle?
We can catch up around the Cross or somewhere perhaps? I fly out to States/Mexico September 17th, so 14th is good.

Had supper with Terenz from Canada on Tuesday after the Opera. Having dinner with Randy Petersen in a few days which also should be fun.

Cabs just got appoval to hike all fares for all metro trips in September up 10%! "Olympic Surcharge". http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Alas, ozstamps, duty calls. I have a few dozen clients arriving Sept. 13 eager to be properly entertained, e.g., a couple of wine tastings followed by dinner at Michael's in The Hunter on Sept. 14 and Opening Ceremony on the 15th. Do you have a point of view about Michael's?

ozstamps Sep 4, 2000 8:33 pm

The trials of Network media! Never been to Michaels' .. others might have and can comment. If it is in the Hunter Valley wine region, just try and make sure someone ELSE is driving the rental car back - quite a drive after Chardonnay sampling! Especially for you guys driving on "wrong" side of road!

Flew into Sydney late last night.

Airport now looking pretty darn good. One nutty thing is the bought daylight saving forward to suit the Olympics. The other states have declined to match this.

There was a flight leaving for Perth at 8.15pm and ARRIVING at Perth at 8pm!! Distance is as far as a USA Transcom .. be like leaving New York and arriving in LAX "Before" you departed!

I've been to Michaels at Peppertree once and the meal ranks as one of the best I've ever had - and I do like to eat/drink well. The dining room is superb and looks out over the vineyard. I think its an excellent place to experience a bit of Oz cuisine (with a French bent).

ozstamps Sep 10, 2000 2:30 am

BamBam .. Thurs Sept 14th sounds fine. Hope you read this in time! Anyone making it all the way from Juneau Alaska to Sydney DESERVES a drink .. long flight.

Anyone else around Sydney for Olympics, please contact me by email or post here, and we will set up a central place and time.

Glen,

Sorry I didn`t get back sooner. We just arrived this morning and are heading out of the hotel for a walk around. Drinks sound wonderful for tonight. If you get this in time, you can leave a message for us at the Crest Hotel and we will get there.

Bambam,
How was the flight? It's 50 degrees, winds 20mph, and raining here - what else is new. Hope you enjoyed your cocktails. Have fun and don't forget my shirt.
