FAQ Update

I am happy to announce that the FAQ dinner will be held at the Auberge Pierre du Calvet in Old Montréal. Located in one of the oldest historic buildings in North America (1725), it has played host to many illustrious figures, including Benjamin Franklin and General Montgomery who planned strategy there in 1775 during the American Revolution.

Nice menu planning, flyme2.

Looks great, Flyme2! Do we sign up now?

flyme2 May 22, 2000 2:21 pm

For all FAQ attendees:

Our dinner at the Pierre du Calvet has been booked and I have taken care of the deposit. I am happy to avoid the hassle of having individual attendees forward me their share...I have been assured that individual tabs will be possible, so you will be able to settle your bill using your preferred plastic (with the exception of the DISCOVER CARD...sorry).

I would appreciate, however, knowing in advance who and how many will be attending the dinner. I have negotiated a very reasonable cut off date of July 15, so there is still some time to decide.

For those wishing to select vegetarian fare or a non-alcoholic substitute for the wine that will accompany dinner consider July 15 the cut off date for advising me.

Keep the FAQ in your thoughts until July 21!

Cheers,

Rick (flyme2)

flyme2.. count me in for dinner and whatever else is planned for the weekend.

nj_flyer: Consider yourself counted. Next!

BlondeBomber May 22, 2000 4:55 pm

Count Terry and I in for dinner (I know I know we still have to confirm). Have car and hotel booked. Just waiting to see how the field work goes before the final flight booking.

Shareholder May 22, 2000 5:48 pm

My mouth is already watering from reading the menu. Fine choices, and a restaurant I remember from days of living in Montreal. I do miss Quebec spring lamb which I used to buy several times a month from my regular butcher on St. Catherine -- though our Alberta flock is has proven to be a reliable and tender replacement out here -- and the roasting rack of lamb we are having tonight has added an extra texture to reading the menu options in anticipation of the July dinner.

Good choice.

dg1 May 22, 2000 7:57 pm

Quoting flyme2 from the previous thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/000234.html)

The majority of respondants preferred to pay $50 USD or less for the main dinner event. However, a significant number limited their dinner budget to $35 USD. In an effort to democratize the FAQ, a venue encompassing both price ranges will be chosen. Not a problem in Montréal where a first class steakhouse dinner can run from $15-$35 USD per meal. A quality all-you-can-eat dinner buffet can set you back a whopping $6.00 USD. Can't beat that anywhere else in North America.

From what I can tell you got a one-price negotiated deal... or are there other options not on the webpage?

flyme2 May 22, 2000 8:23 pm

dg1: You are absolutely correct. I did negotiate a rate of $47 USD for a 5 course meal with wine in a teriffic setting. However, the restaurant does offer an à la carte menu that may be more cost effective. Unfortunately, they can't guarantee that those using that option will be able to get a seating in the more private salon.

I am sooooo disappointed that I will not be able to attend http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif . The menu and the setting look wonderful. The list of attendees looks even better. I am looking forward to the reports of what will certainly be a good time... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

flyme2 May 23, 2000 8:35 pm

In a bid to make everyone happy:

dg1: I will happily yield my 2 night stay at the Renaissance Montréal du Parc (a 3*** Marriott property) to you for the bargain price of $113 USD (total for the 2 nights, July 21 & 22, including all taxes & service charges) that I paid at Priceline. You'll save well over $100 USD over what you're currently set to pay at the Marriott Chateau Champlain. That should cover the cost of 2 FAQ dinners. Let me know if you're interested. I only live 4 minutes from downtown.

My wife Karen and I will be there at the dinner, for sure.

It looks like a great menu!

Sounds yummy, please count me in as well.

NatalieLovesMiles May 28, 2000 12:42 pm

Flyme2, you have done a great job of arranging everything. I am really disappointed http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif not to be able to make it. My visit home (yes, another Montrealer amongst us!) will be for the Jazz Festival time period http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif (end June - beg July). Hope you all have a splendid time!

motnot May 28, 2000 3:57 pm

Such a tease just hearing you all talk about Monreal! My wife and I can't wait to go back there (it was our honeymoon), but probably won't be for a while, have too many other trips planned.

And the Calvet House ... well, Vieux-Montreal rocks!

American Express, one of Canada's largest travel agencies, and Le Centre Sheraton Hotel today unveiled the American Express Club Floor, the first company sponsored and branded hotel floor in Montreal. This is one of the most unique marketing ventures in the hotel industry today.

dg1 May 30, 2000 1:53 pm

flyme2, that is not necessary! Especially since a Priceline rate may not get me points, a fate worse than death! <grin> (I like Marriott's better anyway)

Thanks for your good work in getting this altogether, and good luck, but I'm going to have to cancel. I freely admit I'm just a cheap S.O.B. Have a good one!

Shareholder May 31, 2000 7:06 am

Our dinner spot is also the subject of a half-page feature in the Globe & Mail's travel section this morning. It can be read on their web version: www.globeandmail.com. Go to the subject column on the left side of the page and click on Travel. These stories only last a week, so hurry over. Seems the auberge also has its own web site: www.pierreducalvet.com. I have tried this link and it doesn't seem to work either as a ".ca" or a ".com". Copied it direclty from the GLOBE article.

Very good and appropriate choice flyme2.

FYI: I think the Sheraton Centre is full, though the Amex floor(s) might have space if booked through Amex Travel. I have tried to use my Starwood Preferred Guest 50% off certificate at the hotel, but to no avail. But I think a few of us are up the street at the Four Points which still has space.

flyme2,

I am so happy that I am able to finally confirm that I will be able to attend at least some of the FAQ. Please count me IN! for what I am sure will be one of the best meals I have enjoyed!

Exact details of my travels are still to be worked out, but I will be at dinner. Thank you again for all your efforts with the FAQ. I'm sure that we are all in for a treat!

flyme2 Jun 5, 2000 8:35 pm

Well FlyerTalkers, I'm back from Shanghai and did Brigitte and I have a blast! I think we made more friends on this trip (FT events excepted, of course) than on any other. I guess it didn't hurt that we helped upgrade all 8 of our travelling companions to C class on that long flight from PVG-DTW (13 hours)...but I digress.
dg1: As Rudi would say, "I'm sooooo disappointed" that you won't be able to join our little party. I realize that fiscal responsibility comes first, but if you change your mind or inherit a windfall, please know that you will be most welcome. Be aware, that as an enticement, I keep a very well stocked liquor cabinet. You were one of the first to commit, so forgive my sentimentality.
A couple of attendees will be coming out of the FA "closet", so to speak and I will announce their attendance when they wish me to do so. I'm happy to have them aboard so that FT'ers can get a more balanced view of the Flyer world as we know it.
I'm still working on Randy as an attendee, and he has expressed interest despite the fact that he will be returning from Europe on the Friday before Saturday's dinner. Fellow attendees: Let him know you want him there...post!...email...write!
I am also currently planning to head a group of adventurous types on a Lachine Rapids jet boat ride. If you're not a wimp, don't mind getting wet and love having fun, let me know and I'll sign you up! I'm thinking of scheduling this on Sunday, but it isn't etched in stone.
Okay, FT'ers...ball's in your court!

PremEx Jun 6, 2000 1:45 am

This may be old news, but I just came across it today...FYI:

Stars to Head to Montreal for Laughs

Tim Allen, William Shatner, ``King of Queens'' star Kevin James, Monty Python's Eric Idle and ``Family Feud's'' Louie Anderson are among the stars heading to Montreal for the 18th edition of the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival July 13-23.

The lineup for the event was unveiled at a press conference Monday in Montreal. The event drew more than 1 million people to its indoor and outdoor shows last summer and remains one of the key laugh festivals on the continent.

James, former Montrealer Shatner, Idle, Allen, and Anderson will each be hosting galas at the St. Denis Theater, which are the main comedy showcases at the festival. Other performers slated to appear at the festival include D.L. Hughley from ``The Hughleys,'' ``Saturday Night Live'' alumni Jim Breuer and Rich Hall, Bob Saget, Kathy Kinney from ``The Drew Carey Show,'' U.K. comic Harry Hill, former ``Conan O'Brien'' regular Andy Richter, Pauly Shore, pop star Kim Stockwood, Bobby Slayton, Dom Irrera, Andy Kindler, Jeff Rothpan and Suzanne Westenhoeffer.

Christopher Titus will perform his solo show ``Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding,'' which inspired his hit midseason Fox sitcom ``Titus.'' In addition, San Francisco puppeteer Basil Twist will bring his underwater puppet/music/dance show, ''Symphonie Fantastique,'' for a 20-day run at the Monument National. The festival will also host the North American premiere of ``Gumboots!,'' a South African-flavored song-and-dance show featuring a cappella singing and contemporary percussion.

The festival has an expanded film section this year following its recent merger with Montreal genre-film festival Fantasia.

The film programs include short-picture section ``Eat My Shorts''; a showcase of nine features, ``Comedia''; and ``Comedy Classics,'' which will this year pay tribute to Buster Keaton.

There is also a parallel French-language festival, Juste Pour Rire, with performances by Franco funnymen Anthony Kavanagh, Michel Boujenah, Normand Brathwaite, Martin Petit, Mario Jean, and Maxim Martin.

I still have reservations at the Marriott, so who knows.. if there's an e-saver that weekend I'll come up and wave to you guys through the window <grin>

PremEx: Thanks for all the helpful info. "Eat My Shorts"? Isn't that the one with Amber Lynn? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
dg1: Still keeping my fingers crossed.

Catman Jun 6, 2000 1:15 pm

Mr. Flyme2: My name is Commander Catcop and I would like to confirm that I too will be attending the F-A-Q that weekend to keep the event proper and clean and EVERYONE IN LINE! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

My cathair raised when I see stuff like "Eat My shorts" and this Amber woman! I don't want my friend Catman arrested at this event (the scandal! The PIctures!)

See you in about a month! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

johna Jun 6, 2000 6:55 pm

The jetboat ride on the Lachine Rapids sounds fun - count me it!

Way Omni: the son of the inventor of the jet boat decided back in 1960 to try going upstream through the Grand Canyon. Lava Falls (rating varies between 8 and 10 on the 10-point scale that's unique to the Canyon) provided the most difficulty - it took something like 45 attempts (over a couple of days, I think). After that, the rest of the Canyon was a piece of cake.

The Park Service immediately added a regulation prohibiting upstream runs!

flyme2 Jun 6, 2000 8:53 pm

Commander Catcop: I'm sure I don't know what you mean. From what PremEx has led me to believe "Eat My Shorts" is a short documentary film done by the National Film Board of Canada detailing the horrific events surrounding a UA flight gone awry that is forced to land in a remote area of Northern Ontario (Canada). Short on rations, the all-vegetarian crew and pax must find a creative solution to those terrible pangs of hunger. Not being the roots and berries types, they resort to...well, eating their clothing...hence the title. The story does end happily, however, when they are all rescued and treated for (over) exposure. Red/Green will be doing their take on the story in September.

RichG Jun 6, 2000 9:22 pm

I thought it was about an electrician who cleverly finds a way to conceal his mistakes by... eating them! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

flyme2 Jun 6, 2000 10:20 pm

RichG: No, that's "Eek, My Shorts!"

AnnaS Jun 7, 2000 7:28 am

Count me in for the jet boat ride as well, sounds like a blast! As long as you don't have to be an accomplished rafter/jet boat rider, I'm game! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Regards,

Catman Jun 7, 2000 10:02 am

Oh, the Canadian version of "Eat My Shorts!"

Poor CMDR Catcop was misinformed. He thought they and you all were going to show the more "adult" U-S version. I told him of his error.

And I think Amber Lynn now works at teh Krispy kreame at teh World Trade Center.
