July 30, 2016 ALASKA BBQ DO

Sorry for the late post, but the summer BBQ will be Saturday, July 30. The kitchen is finally done and work & travel are slowing down enough to finally this get together. Other than the BBQ, all time will be on your own to explore Alaska. I will leave it to Jackal to pick up and run with the Alaska DO 2017 (as he has now promised).

Post if you plan to attend.

I am sad to report that I will be out of state and unable to join. Sounds like great fun, though!

And the kitchen IS beautiful and worth a visit to Alaska to see, though there's nothing to see in the garage, so just move right along past it. ;)

BOB W May 28, 2016 3:16 pm

MENU

Summer Salad ala AKronin
Marinated Tri-Tip
BBQ pork ribs
Grilled vegetable and Isreali Couscous salad
Pork with green peppers and onions
Various side dishes
Mystery desserts

The rest TBD-suggestions welcome

The AK cellar is intact, it's the one in Pittsburgh that has gone missing:(

FriendlySkies May 28, 2016 3:20 pm

I would love to join, though the new job is going to keep my tethered to the KC area for the next six months. :(

Dang. I miss it by a month. Fly home to AU 30/6.

nomadic.relief May 28, 2016 11:24 pm

As mentioned in the previous thread - quite tempted. Will have to see how things pan out over the next few weeks!

jrl767 May 29, 2016 12:54 am

my wife and I are returning LHR-SEA on 24 Jul, then I'm going back to DC on the redeye Mon 25 ... I've been considering a weekend trip for the Sounders-Galaxy match (Sun 31 Jul, 1300; we have season tix) ... this IS workable, but it seems to score fairly low on the "smart and practical" scale

nomadic.relief May 29, 2016 12:56 am

What is this "smart and practical scale" you speak of?! I have never heard of such a ridiculous thing. ;)

Exactly - wait until you see my itinerary which I will post when I have finally booked - all that for a BBQ and then work on Monday (afternoon) as I will be on a redeye Sunday. Just sounds like so much fun -don't think I can sneak in a ADQ run though- even FAI might be pushing it. SEA Friday night will be the start - looking like DAY-MSP-SEA for Friday July 29th evening.

Never made it to one of these Flyer Talk gatherings before. This one is drivable since I'm also in Anchorage. Looking forward to this. Let me know if I can help you out.

GRALISTAIR Jun 5, 2016 11:29 am

My flights are booked -all I have to do now is make sure I do not get too intoxicated and thus denied boarding!! ;) ^

violist Jun 5, 2016 2:34 pm

My flights are booked. Staying with my friend Bill in Muldoon
(we had a bourguignonne get-together at his place once) -
might want to bring him and another guest.

I know who.

No, it's not me. However, I will be there in spirit.

SFOTerry Jun 28, 2016 6:37 am

AK is a big state.

Would it be possible to post a hint about where this is going down? :)

The BBQ will take place at Casa De Bob W on the lower hillside in Anchorage.

Guests are encouraged to bring a side dish or dessert or their favorite libations to share with the group. Post here if you plan to bring anything and I will add it to the menu.

People can show up as early as 3 PM to help prep the dinner which will happen around 7 PM. Traditionally this goes until the sun starts coming up again for those that want to sit by the fire pit and hang out.

See you soon!!

Can't make this one, but good chance we will be there for the 2017 DO.

CDKing Jun 29, 2016 9:15 am

Mark me as tentative. I found saver space (w/ 5 hour layover in ATL) Saturday on the way over (arriving just before 7PM) but nothing under 30K on the return. I grabbed it but I'll keep looking to see if the return comes down. If It doesn't I'm going to cancel.

ctporter Jun 29, 2016 11:00 am

Well, my dh cannot get the time off, city is too busy (bleh!) But, count me in. I am excited about this :) Question though, I am booking one of the Hilton properties near Seward Hwy, is there Uber or Taxi to the event location?

In it's infinite wisdom (read the taxi companies own our city council), Uber is not allowed in Anchorage. Taxis are plentiful and not very expensive. $25 or so from my place to the airport, depending on traffic. Very early morning trips should be a bit less expensive since there will be less traffic.

Perfect! booking my trip today then :)

GrjApp Jun 29, 2016 5:16 pm

The plan is to be there, arriving Thu evening (Lake Hood anyone?) and doing a dine and dash on Saturday (right now have a 1.25 am flight Sunday AM).

Caveat is that all of this might cancel due to work obligations, won't know until pretty much week of.

monitor Jun 29, 2016 7:37 pm

With the news today from the State Capitol about the halving of the Stipend, does that mean that the tri-tips will now become one and one-half tips? :D

Doing the new budget math, the portions will be smaller but there will be tri-tip, supplemented with Costco Polish Dogs and other unrecognizable meat like products.:p

I arrive very late Friday night and have a 00.59am Sunday AM. If you are there I suggest we share a cab if that is OK? :)

nomadic.relief Jul 1, 2016 3:35 pm

So I am officially in!

I've got a day to venture into Seattle on the way up, getting in Friday night by sunset and then leaving in time for a sunset flight to Fairbanks on Sunday. Better make sure to sit on the right side! :D

Can add a couple Canadian (Okanagan) bottles to the Wall o Wine if preferred varietals are sent my way in advance.

Glad to see that you can make it.

The Okanagan is at the top of my list of places to visit. I know nothing of the area but have heard for years that they make exceptional wines there. Bring a couple of your favorites and we will do a preview tasting.

OMG... been away for a few days (busy with work) and things are coming together nicely ;)

Ton of folks arriving from the L48 too! (and beyond :D)

And one from above the L48! (I don't think I really qualify as "beyond" as technically I'm closer.)
