FT Santa Paws Present Exchange

Last year, there was discussion on the Secret Santa thread about a Santa Paws Exchange--exchanging gifts for furry family members.

I've volunteered to coordinate it this year, so here goes... :D

If you want to participate, send me a PM with:
  1. Your Name
  2. Number of pets "participating"
  3. Pet name(s)
  4. Your email address
  5. Mailing address for your pet(s)
  6. Toys they like,
  7. Treats they like and any allergies or restrictions they have with regard to treats,
  8. neck measurement
  9. Any other information you wish to share that is interesting,

"Suggested" value, around $15/pet, not including shipping. I'll send our assignments by November 1, please ship presents by December 10.

If there's any interest in this, I'll coordinate it. :)

How could I miss it?! I'd happily exchange presents with another dog-cat family (though I might suggest a lower dollar limit for cat gifts vs. dog gifts, since, in my experience, the average cat is happy with toys that cost <$4.

The average cat is happy with the shipping box! ;)

Count us in.

I'm the somewhat  owner of a cat that does not find boxes entertaining and it's very disappointing. We also have a 2-year-old black lab who hasn't yet discovered that his brother (the cat) is of a very different species.

Anyone mind if I join in?

My guess is the more paws the better (sorry, couldn't resist!). :D

Cheers.

You "own" a cat?

You must be unique in human society, as it's usually the other way around :D

Count myself and my two furry beasts in

kipper Sep 12, 2014 7:50 pm

Anyone who has dogs or cats is welcome to join. :D The more the furrier? :D

Count me in, I will send you the details. I am down to one cat as when my son moved out of state he took two of the three cats. It was a VERY sad day for me but the best thing for the cats. Jax is a box lover too but he does like his toys as well.

BTW Jax has no rules, he does what he wants. He is quite the ornery cat, he probably deserves a lump of coal because he is usually on the naughty list. I guess that is what I get for naming him after a Sons of Anarchy character, naughty kitty.

Goldie says 'Yes, please.' She loves surprises! And she promises to do her pawsitively best to make someone else happy for the holidays.

Chubbs has commanded that I particpate!

Count us in.

[Hiss! FT changes my cat emoticon to something bizarre!]

This household has 3 felines who love boxes and what is inside them. The Alpha Cat has figured out that his favorite food arrives in the mail and he inspects every package that arrives.

Maybe link to this thread from the Travel with Pets forum to let more folks know about it?

That's a good idea! I'll try to take care of that tonight. :D

Clearly you haven't priced cat toys lately. ;)

My SIL sent a Hot Pursuit toy to my cats last Christmas, and it is possibly the best cat toy ever. The cats here request it to be turned on so often that I finally invested in rechargeable batteries for the thing.

To be fair, I think the dollar amount should be the same no matter what the species. That might discourage hamster and parakeet owners from participating. :D

Is $15 ok, or should it be more/less?

I think $15 is fine, you will probably see people spending in the $20 to $25 range as I have found when it comes to pet lovers what is a few bucks? Last year on the regular FTer Secret Santa one of the people I was matched up with had a cat so I sent her kitty cat stuff above and beyond her regular gift. I am a mush when it comes to kitty cats for sure.

Update: just realized that I phrased the last sentence above badly. What I was trying to say was that setting gift price based on species might discourage some pet owners from participating. Personally I've always wanted an excuse to buy one of those cool hamster balls :D but unfortunately around here a hamster would end up as somebody's snack.

Any thoughts on attempting to match cat to cat and dog to dog? Personally I would have no idea what to get for a cat

Tuna, catnip, crinkly balls, wand toys, scratchy boxes, big cardboard boxes, bird feeders outside their window and soft pillows are just a few ideas.

What do dogs like besides tennis balls and large bones?

Ha, touche.

My own little morkie loves crinkly toys, small stuffed animals, squeaker toys, tug of rope toys, bones, treats, rawhides, chews, nylon bones, and for some naughty reason brushes (to chew on, not actually be brushed by).

We use two brushes when grooming the cats. One for the fur and one for them to chew while being brushed. Saves on Band-Aids that way.

Everyone is doing a pretty good job at describing or explaining what toys/treats their pets enjoy. That said, I was thinking that I might try to match dog/dog and cat/cat where possible. :)

We're bold. We'll go cross species. :D

I agree! I can figure something out.

kipper Sep 21, 2014 5:27 pm

Would those who have more than one pet prefer to ship to one house with more than one pet participating, or are we ok to divide up households?

Speaking as one who has organized gift swaps, I suggest you (for the sake of your sanity ;)) avoid making this an exercise in multi-variable mathematics. Either per pet or per household, but mixing the two, no. Personally I don't have a preference as to which you choose.

I agree, until recently I had 3 cats. Toys and treats were community property and shared or stolen between all the cats.

Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

tcl Sep 23, 2014 7:16 am

My pup is ok to being SecretPaws to any species, goats, goldfish, pigs and younger siblings included. Should there be an additional option for those to say which they are/are not comfortable with?

As for per household/per pet, it can simply be the # of times one chooses to participate. Just change or not change the name of the entrant :)

chgoeditor Sep 23, 2014 10:46 am

$15 per pet sounds good to me. There's a good chance I'll got the Amazon Prime route, so I have no strong feelings re. sending to one household vs. two.

I think I'm going to try to do 1 household to 1 household, but there may be one or two that need to split, so it's good to know you probably won't mind. :D

I never expected to end up relying on Amazon for things like 10 lb bags of kibble, but when the local stores stopped carrying Eukabana, we started getting all our cat food via subscription on Amazon Prime. Amazon also carries a great selection of cat toys (hint, hint :D).

Can we get a Santa Paws icon to increase visibility for this event? Or maybe a post in Travel Buzz so that pet "owners" who don't usually travel with their fur darlings (& consequently don't read the Travel with Pets forum) will see mention of this purrfectly marvelous event?

I don't want to cross-post everywhere. :)

That said, if someone creative-minded wanted to come up with a Santa Paws icon, perhaps Carol would allow it to be placed?
