Everybody's always gotten such a kick out of you (sorry, couldn't help it). And you leave Arthur with no one to compete with in the transcon derby. :( :D

Seriously, you'll be missed. You're definitely smart not to push it in the early days. See you at the next one, hopefully.

I think i will lose the derby. 7 RT BOS-SAN runs betwen 3/27 and 5/12 with 2 more earlier in the year.

I just had to return to the first page of this thread to reconfirm that the DO is at 6 pm - I made the plans to come without realizing that I'd have an appointment at 5:30 that night and would be late. Thankfully, that appointment has been moved to tomorrow so I'll be there shortly after six (a lady has to be fashionably late).

My father drove up from Hartfordish on Saturday but I didn't realize that everyone would want pickles so I didn't ask him to stop at Rein's.

I'm most looking forward to meeting violist, to see if he has any tips on how to rejoin a music group here.

I was in the Government Center area yesterday. I purchased a VR for myself. Please note that 13 VR’s are in stock for those so inclined.

Sorry to hear that. Feel better!

So...I have a fridge full of pickles but might not be able to make it. My schedule for Wed. keeps morphing. It was just changed to having a meeting at 6pm then was told immediately after it would be earlier. I don't know what's going to happen. MM, if you wanna swing by the Commonwealth Hotel on your way in to town, I'll bring them with me. They will not have been unrefrigerated all day, I promise.

yes I can do that! I will pm you too

mikeef May 21, 2013 9:36 am

Looks like the rain will hold off tomorrow night and temps should be in the 70s. Short-sleeves required!

Mike

JY1024 May 21, 2013 10:55 pm

Does look like weather will be quite nice tomorrow night (unlike every other night this week). Good work picking the date, Mike! ^

What time are you shooting to get there? 6PM? (I tried looking at the first post, but don't think I saw a time posted.)

BOS Eph May 22, 2013 6:23 am

I'll likely be there before 6:00 but I think 6:00 is the "official" start time.

I should be a tad early to tonight's Deaux myself sporting a black and orange backpack (to carry said pickles home later)

dagaetch May 22, 2013 7:46 am

I'll probably be there around 5:45, depending on the T. Are we planning to meet on the patio?

Firewind May 22, 2013 7:48 am

To newbs, there is no official call to order. Come when and as you are. And the same applies to leaving. Fungible cash would be nice for settling at that time, and remember the old "18% rule" for large groups. These are for Mike's benefit. A year ago, someone - MM? - in his position got shorted.

See you soon! I'll be arriving early with name tags for screen name and first name. The latter is optional. Some planning on getting pickled may exercise that option.....

And, yes, dagaetch, we'll be out at the corner of the enclosed area.

:)

It's actually going to be closer to 25%, once you include meal taxes. It was MM who got shorted last year, although I think he was eventually made whole.

Weather and time

Note: Despite my good weather karma, I spoke too soon, as it now looks like it might rain. In case of rain, they're going to reserve a portion of the patio for us that isn't affected by weather, but they will also have tables inside. I know that it takes away a bit from the mingling, but it's still a pretty good alternative.

Sorry, I completely forgot to put a start time in the OP. We usually shoot for 6pm, but people come and go at their leisure. I'll be there by 5:45 at the latest: look for my yellow polo shirt and blue backpack. I'm guessing that I won't be the first (MM will likely have downed a few PDBs by the time I get there.). Many of us have the yellow FT tags or white MP tags.

If you have any questions, concerns, etc., do not hesitate to PM me before 5:30 today.

Or our remnants will be -- meaning Mike brings a couple of sheets printed with the FlyerTalk logo. If we're inside, look for a handwritten note saying where. That said, the area does have a roof over it, so if there's lightning but no wind, no audible at scrimmage may be needed.

I hate to back out so late - but just back from vacation yesterday and today being the first day back in the office is taking longer than I thought to get caught up.

So, I'll miss you guys this time, and definitely see you at the next one.

Oh, too bad. I just saw this. I arrived this morning from Sao Paulo, but had a couple of meetings mid-day at my office in the western burbs. It would be interesting to meet you guys.

TheBOSman May 22, 2013 3:33 pm

Boston Do: May 22. Spring may be back!

As always I overestimate the time it will take me to get here. We've decided to move inside due to high wind.

Firewind May 23, 2013 3:25 am

Success. Thank you, Mike, and all. "To each, according to... From each, according to..." was fulfilled again.

jBrodes May 23, 2013 6:11 am

Yes, thank you Mike and all who took part in planning this event. It was very nice to meet you all and share a couple beers, tacos, and pickles!

Look forward to the next one :)

It was nice meeting all of you last night. Looking forward to the next one.

mikeef May 23, 2013 11:10 am

Thanks to all who attended, especially our newbies! I hope everyone picked up something new but, more importantly, had fun.

Note: We were over by $1.57 when I collected the cash! I'm going to round that up a bit and make a $100 donation to the One Fund on behalf of the Boston Do crowd. :)

Now, I have questions for you:

It has been suggested to do a Do in Kendall Square. I'd like to do what's best for all involved, so please answer the following questions. If you don't want to answer below, you can PM me.

1) Do you have a preference of downtown Boston or Cambridge (or something else)?
2) Would either of those locations prevent you from coming to a Do, i.e., if it's held in Boston, would that stop you from coming, or if it's held in Cambridge, would that stop you from coming?
3) Assuming it's not 50 degrees in July, do you have any reason to believe that the Kinsale patio would not suit our needs?

If you want to remain anonymous (to everyone but me), feel free to PM me and I'll aggregate results.

Talking to people last night, there did seem to be a preference for remaining downtown, but again, we want to maximize the fun for all.

Potential date thrown out for the July Do is Monday, July 22.

Mike

Marathon Man May 23, 2013 12:03 pm

well mates it was a fine time last night indeed! Nice to see/meet people!!

If anyone has questions about GCs, Beers from VT, skiing, VRs and google wallet, just PM me or email me!!

:)Mm

World2Travel May 23, 2013 1:15 pm

Thank you so much, Mike for organizing and thanks to everyone for their useful tips. I had a great time and it was great to meet all of you. Thanks MM for sharing the pickles!

I'm looking forward to a July DO. Cambridge or Boston is fine with me. My only suggestion is that we avoid trivia night next time due to the noise. I think the patio @Kinsale would be great.

sweeper20 May 23, 2013 1:19 pm

Missed this but would love to try to make the next one!

Kendall Square is great -

Marathon Man May 23, 2013 1:31 pm

a place with street parking, T access, CVSs and ATMs lol and decent beers on tap... I vote for July 22 as that is the night I get back from AMS and can just head right over WITH dutch things in tow!

Efrem May 23, 2013 2:08 pm

Questions in post 145 - no need to waste space by quoting them:

1. No preference between downtown Boston and Kendall Square. Either way I drive in or drive to Braintree and take the T from there. They're a wash in both cases.

2. Neither would keep me from coming if it fits my schedule.

3. Nothing wrong with the Kinsale patio if it's a normal July evening and not raining.

And thanks again for organizing this, Mike. Right now I don't have anything on the evening of July 22nd. Looking forward to seeing everyone again!

Actually, if you figure in that I completely stiffed you, you'll be up by $30 when I clear up the Google Wallet thing.

jBrodes May 24, 2013 5:42 am

Questions in post 145 -

1. I work in Cambridge so it's easier for me but really I have no preference between downtown Boston and Cambridge

2. Neither area would stop me from making the DO as long as I'm free

3. I think that the Kinsale patio would be great for the DO. I think there's sufficient space and in the summer it's a great spot!

As of now July 22nd works with my schedule!

Don't worry, your $30 had already been included, since I know where to find you. Actually, on second thought...

Michael, thank you organizing Wednesday evening. It was a great time with a lot more people than the first one I attended. I didn't get a chance to speak with everyone, but maybe at the next DO. I thought they were only held once a year so I am very excited to see you are thinking about one in July. I think the only reason I found out about this one was because someone, maybe Firewind, had it listed in his signature area of his normal posts. I don't normally look in Community Buzz as there are so many forums I can't keep up with.
1) Prefer Boston
2) Would go to Cambridge, but would probably be later to the gathering. I drive in but thinking of the people that take the T how about something by Alewife Station? Jasper White's Summer Shack is there and a Bertucci's.
3) Kinsale is fine with me.
Of course, I think we should have a DO at a hotel lounge/restaurant...for hotel points and double miles!>>>http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...ilies/wink.gif

Chirpchirp May 25, 2013 6:38 am

Hi- I'm a newbie and was unable to make it to this one. I'm glad you are thinking of one in July! I look forward to meeting you all. Kinsale seems to work so no reason not to keep going there; however, Cambridge is good too!

I'd actually consider that, although the prices would certainly be higher. Option #2 would be to rent a suite at a hotel and bring our own food (or run up a ridiculous room service bill). A little tacky to bring our own food, but, well, ya know...
#3 If you guys want to schlepp out to Brookline, we're happy to host an event at our house.

But at this point, I have received far more indications of interest for Kinsale than Cambridge. Or Brookline.

Mike

Marathon Man May 28, 2013 8:02 am

What if we like rented one of those boston trollies or a duck tour boat and had a sort of rolling rally do where it travels to rite aid, cvs and walmarts?!

Id totally pitch in $ and help to get that going!

pawtim May 31, 2013 11:19 pm

I'd like to echo all that Mike says, and, if I may, point out that I was ther person who originally suggested the Kinsale as our meeting spot for our DOs, so I will absorb the blame on that. I used to work in the building across the street, and I ran the internship program, so we would debrief on Friday afternoons in "conference room K"; interns are college students after all.

Nobody thinks that the Kinsale is the nicest place on earth, but it is centrally located; it has decent prices (beers are at least a dollar cheaper than Faneuil Hall); and, they accommodate our group, which, frankly can be unpredictable of size. Will we be five people? Will we be 45? The more the merrier, but we need a restaurant that will be flexible with us.

Of course, the DO location is precisely where the DO organizer sets it up. Mike and I chose the Kinsale. If someone wants to set up a DO elsewhere, then so be it!

I live in beautiful PAWtucket, RI, and I need to catch the T from South Station, so I'm disinclined to attend an event way the heck in Cambridge. But, that shouldn't discourage local cambridgians from meeting up! This week I've met up with five peeps for lunch whom I've met through the DOs. We met up in downtown Boston; if you're out in the hinterlands of Cambridge or Pawtucket or wherever, step up!

I like the Kinsale for the same reasons Tim points out (and there's a CVS near it and often some street parking can be had nearby).

Frankly, Tim, it is one of the only things left in life you and I agree on too! :D:D:D
