My flights are not set in stone because i'd rather pay the extra 5K points to use a non-us based airline ( no availability yet). Not sure if i will be able to handle AA F after flying CX F in May :(. There does apear to be CX F available but I'd have to take extra vacation days to get it.

Interested==would be my first DO. Unclear if elderly parent has plans to be in Hong Kong end of October (extended family wedding plans...), if so, I'll be in Asia via HK! SPG/Marriott/Hyatt hotel cards -OK. More important: non- smoking, mildew free rooms: my fault for not checking first (tired, befuddled.)

Have only spent about a day in Shanghai before and would love to see more of it. November tends to be a good time to travel for me, but am not able to confirm this early.

We have stuck our neck out and will be arriving in Biejing on 27 October, joining a tour group going to Xi’an, Guilin, Chongqing, cruise Yangtze river to Yichang, then fly to Shanghai arriving evening of 6 November. See some sights in Shanghai and then say goodby to the group and be ready to rock and roll as early as Wednesday 9 Nov.

Are you serious? I would love to visit Tibet, but isn't November too cold for it already? We can ask Spaceman about his tour to Xian to see the terracotta warriors at the DO... On my to-do list as well.

Wow^, been back only once in the last 14+ years. But heading out there in April with Mom and November for the DO. Both tickets booked.

P.S: My Shanghainese get laughed at so much I'm afraid to speak it anymore. :(

I was thinking an HSR trip might be interesting, possibly originating and/or terminating elsewhere with the DO in the middle or at one end. If others are interested I'd be happy to help plan that.

I think Nanjing would be a good destination if you really want to feel the speed of the HSR. If you go for a nearby destination like Suzhou, the train doesn't really have the time to get up to speed before it has to slow down again, and it's not really value-for-money.
Round-trip 2nd-class tickets for Nanjing (about 1+ hour each way) will cost around 300 RMB/pax.
