I can't make it on the 6th, but I can put in a good word for Jaleo. Definitely get the garlic shrimp, which made tapas converts out of at least two folks from my office.

davidvcd Feb 1, 2010 1:50 pm

With so many people recommending Jaleo, how can I not come ???
Count me in if it doesnt snow again.

GoodOmens Feb 1, 2010 1:54 pm

Ah why not, count me in (If you can get more seats)! I do like Jaleo.

We've now got a group of 9. I'll keep the reservation (under the name "Davis") for a party of 8. It's not uncommon for someone to be unable to attend at the last minute. If everyone shows up, we'll just squeeze another chair around the table. I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

I was going to jump right in but forgot that we are going skiing at Wisp & Roundtail this weekend. Well, may be next time.

By the way, I've lived in DC since 1999 but never even heard of these places. I guess I need to eat out more, with the fellow FTers. :D

I'll monitor the weather and post to the thread if anything regarding Saturday lunch changes.

Is this mostly for those who live in DC, or can those of us who occasionally travel there join in as well?

Everyone is welcome. In fact, we often try to schedule Happy Hours/meals around the schedules of out-of-towners who will be in DC.

Everyone is welcome and if you're coming to town - post and maybe a special meet can be set-up

Just checking (as I have just come in from an hour of snow shoveling, the second session today) - are we still on for tomorrow?

gvdIAD Feb 5, 2010 8:17 pm

I certainly don't want folks to take unnecessary risks getting into the District tomorrow, and suspect a lot of secondary roads won't be in very good shape. I think the deciding factor will be whether Metro is operating only to underground stations tomorrow. If it is, that will make it pretty tough for those of us not in the District (or on the Orange line between Ballston and Rosslyn) to get into the city. I'd note that apparently most attractions in DC will be shut down tomorrow (all Smithsonian Museums are closed tomorrow, for example), which makes me wonder whether a lot of restaurants - including Jaleo - will also be closed. I'll decide before 9:00 am tomorrow and post to the thread. If those who've previously indicated interest have any opinions on whether we should try to meet, please feel free to post to the thread.

EDIT:

I just read that Metro has suspended all above-ground rail service and all Metrobus service on Saturday. I think that means we should probably cancel. I won't cancel the reservation until tomorrow morning in case there's a groundswell in favor of trying to make it to lunch.

gvdIAD Feb 6, 2010 5:17 am

I'm going to cancel today's event. There's no above-ground Metro service, roads - including major thoroughfares - are snow covered, parking in DC would be difficult with snow emergency rules in effect. All of the news outlets are recommending against driving. It's so bad that even the US Postal Service has canceled all deliveries for the DC area today.

Let us know when you're in town again mwg25, and we'll reschedule.

I just walked out in front of my apartment on King Street in Alexandria, and saw only one 4x4 on the road. It was deathly quiet outside (which I thought was nice). There's no way I'd be able to reach the freeway 2 blocks away! Looks like it'll be a day of lounging around for me!
