Sat Dec 11 - BWI

Mileage-running!

Arriving 3.30pm, departing Sun 7.20am. Haven't booked hotel yet, but will be out near the airport. Dinner anyone?

gvdIAD Nov 5, 2010 10:12 am

Anybody else for dinner tomorrow at 6:45 pm at Sea Pearl Restaurant in Merrifield?

tonywestsider Nov 5, 2010 11:17 am

I am confirming for Saturday night dinner. I can come to Pentagon City Metro for pick-up. GvdIAD, I'll pm you tonight for phone number and pick-up time.

cova Nov 5, 2010 6:03 pm

You can add me in - if you still have room for a 6th person.

We do; you're in.

usa18dca Nov 11, 2010 9:43 pm

When is the next dinner?

mhnadel Nov 12, 2010 12:13 pm

Here's a suggested venue.

The Washington Post mentions an aviation themed hot dog joint which just opened on Wednesday on the Hill (Barracks Row, so Eastern Market metro). Called DC-3 and has some association with the owners of Matchbox Ted's Bulletin. They supposedly have 17 regional variations. No idea of whether they serve alcohol.

Only 20 seats so probably not the right place for a huge event and I don't know if they will have a full liquor license, but how could we resist the theme?

My schedule is a bit crazy right now, but I could do any of the next few Monday or Wednesday nights.

mhnadel Nov 15, 2010 6:36 am

Having now consulted my calendar in the interests of avoiding double or triple booking myself, I'll ask if anybody is interested in checking out DC-3 on any of the following datesL

Thursday 18 November
Monday 22 November
Monday 29 November
or Wednesday 1 December

432 8th Street, SE
Washington, DC 20003
www.eatdc3.com

Looks like nearest metro is Eastern Market.

Also, while not so good as far as food, but in the interests of shameless self-promotion, I will also mention that I am one of 5 members of Voices in the Glen presenting a free storytelling program for adults on Saturday night, 20 November, at the Kensington Row bookshop on Howard Avenue in Kensington, Maryland as part of Tellebration, an international night of storytelling. One of the stories I'm telling even sort of has to do with travel.

obnoxoid Nov 22, 2010 4:19 am

mhnadel, does December 1 still work for you?

Let's see if we can rope anyone else into this. This could possibly be my first time meeting up with other FTers!

Yep, December 1st is still open for me.

gvdIAD Nov 22, 2010 4:41 am

I'll be on my way to DRS on the First so won't be able to attend, but once you confirm dinner, I'll be happy to post it on p1 of the thread as a confirmed event.

mot29 Nov 22, 2010 6:15 am

Assuming that I don't pick up a bump on my return from Berlin on 11/30, I'd be interested in the DC3 dinner.

Three is probably sufficient to make it official. I figure we can have up to 6 folks and possibly go up the street for drinks afterwards if anybody wants to.

tonywestsider Nov 23, 2010 9:15 pm

I can probably make it on Dec. 1. I'll just walk after work to this place since this is in my neck of the woods.

mhnadel Nov 24, 2010 8:21 am

Let's Make It Official - DC-3 on 1 Dec

We have enough folks to make this an official event.

DC-3 (aviation themed hot dog place at Barracks Row)
432 8th Street, SE
Washington, DC 20003
www.eatdc3.com

Shall we say 6:30 p.m.?

Attendees:
1.mhnadel
2. obnoxoid
3. tonywestsider

I will call them on Monday and see if they take reservations, though I suspect not.

gvdIAD Nov 24, 2010 10:42 am

The December 1 event is listed on page 1 of the thread as an official DC event. Hope everyone who is able to attend has a great time.

I'd be happy to schedule something. I'll be here from the 27th on. What's your preference?

mot29 Nov 29, 2010 12:54 pm

At the risk of being accused of hijacking, any interest in supporting Gulf Coast Seafood night on Dec 1? This is a national event with several hundred participating restaurants to support Gulf Coast seafood. As a native of New Orleans, I thought I'd mention this. http://www.dineamerica2010.com/restaurants.htm
Acadiana is participating. I've made a reservation for four, but of course it can be cancelled. If others aren't interested, then I'll drop my proposal.

mhnadel Nov 30, 2010 1:57 pm

I'd rather stick to the original plan for tomorrow evening since:

a) DC-9 is a lot less expensive than Acadiana

and

b) It will give me an excuse to get to a particular store over on Barracks Row before dinner

tonywestsider Nov 30, 2010 11:40 pm

I am confirming to attend DC-3 tomorrow. I think however, that a Dec. 29 dinner would be a good idea as well, just to celebrate the end of and beginning of the new year. I think gvdIAD would be interested as he will be in town. Others can chime in when they get back from their trips as well.

mot29 Dec 1, 2010 6:47 am

Certainly. And, not sour grapes or anything, but as a New Orleanian, I kind of want to support the Gulf. So please drop me from DC3 tonight. I've got to find some oysters tonight.
Enjoy the dogs.

mhnadel Dec 3, 2010 11:15 am

The 29th works for me. Actually, that whole week (other than New Year's Eve) is clear for me right now.

If Captain Denny really is going to be in town, we should probably find out where he is staying and make it convenient for him. That may make it harder for metro accessibility, but I am willing to offer a ride from Vienna to points west, as long as the dinner is late enough.

tonywestsider Dec 3, 2010 8:39 pm

Darn. I just posted to you and awhile back as well, mentioning that a get together on the 29th would be good. I just looked at my Tripit itinerary and it says that I am flying back from LHR that evening on the 29th.

Please go ahead without me if you want to meet on the 29th. If you need to reschedule, I am available on the 30th.

jackal Dec 4, 2010 7:24 am

beckoa and I will be arriving 12/5 on AS6 at 9ish PM and leaving the next morning on AS5 at 9ish AM (as part of a mega 11-segment, 20,600-mile MR involving DCA, KOA, and MIA--yes, in that order).

Kinda late for dinner (unless someone wants to eat a late dinner), but if there are any night owls out that want to show off some DC nightlife, we're quite amenable. :)

Thanks for picking up the slack while I was away, UNHBuzzard. Let us know what you hear and I'll try to schedule accordingly.

Bummer! I'm reading this too late, otherwise I would have been up and happy to meet you and beckoa for late dinner. Sorry! Next time, okay. Aloha from DC.

It appears that Capt. Flanagan will be available on the 29th for dinner out near IAD. He'd prefer something early-ish as he'll be flying out the morning of the 30th. His preferred location would be somewhere around Chantilly.

Would a start time of say, 6:45 pm for drinks followed by dinner at 7:15 pm work?

Anyone with suggestions for dining spots near Chantilly?

I know Chantilly isn't on a Metro line, but I suspect we'd be able to provide rides to those interested.

Now, as luck would have it, I'm moving on the 29th (yes, I know I'm only moving 2 blocks, but it still qualifies as a move with all of the corresponding disruption), so I'm not sure of my own availability, though I'll try as hard as possible to make it.

Please indicate your interest by posting to the thread. Assuming we reach critical mass, I'll ask UNHBuzzard to confirm with Capt. Denny, and then -- assuming each of you chimes in with a restaurant recommendation -- confirm a venue.

Count me in.

I live in the area

1. Dogfish Alehouse http://www.dogfishalehouse.com/dfh-a...e-fairfax.html

2. Bonefish Grill http://www.bonefishgrill.com/locator...riar-virginia/

Fairfax Connector runs bus service from Vienna Metro to these locations. Rush hour service is plentiful but the return to Vienna would probably require a ride http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/pdf/651wd.pdf

mhnadel Dec 20, 2010 12:36 pm

I should be able to make it, though 6:45 could be pushing it a little if traffic or weather comes up. I can also offer a lisft from the Vienna metro.

As for venues, the best restaurant in that area by far is Thai Basil, but that might be a bit beyond some folk's comfort level. Of the non-ethnic offerings in the general vicinity, there are two decent options in Centreville. Bonefish Grill has already been mentioned, but I think Sweetwater Tavern has somewhat better food and infinitely better service, as well as being locally owned.

gvdIAD Dec 20, 2010 3:31 pm

A head's up for planning purposes: Restaurant Week will be the 17th to 23d of January. I'm in SIN the first part of that week, but return on Thursday. I've made 2 reservations, each for parties of 6:

Saturday, January 22, I have a 7:00 pm reservation at TenPenh for a party of 6.
Confirmed:

GoingAway
flugvergnugen
mot29
mhnadel
violist

Sunday, January 23, I have a 1:00 pm reservation at Morrison-Clark (on L St in DC), now for a party of 8.
Confirmed:
gvdIAD
GoingAway
flugvergnugen
Robert
tonywestsider

If you're interested in one or both, please post to the thread. I'll try to accommodate as many interested parties as possible.

mot29 Dec 20, 2010 5:53 pm

This might post twice --
But, please put me down for TenPenh.

I'm fine with Dogfish, but I'm not sure I would describe it as close to Chantilly.

Huh? The one in Fairfax is only about 2 miles from the intersection of 50 and 28.
