- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

I got the same TYPremier card during that time period (PPE at the time) so I don't mess with this one either. Interestingly enough, it's my only Citi account that I get regular promos without having to make any calls.

I had opened a second TYPremier account last year during the 50K promo, and a few weeks ago, when the annual fee posted, they offered me something like 2,500 TYP after $3K spend. I didn't think it was worth it, especially since it has no annual fee.

Yesterday, I called about my Citi AA card, which I've had for many years, to see if there were any promos. This account almost never has any promos. With the fee coming up soon, I asked if there were any waivers or promos. The agent offered me $95 statement credit after $1K spend in 90 days. I accepted it.

A couple of weeks ago I made two separate calls about my Citi AA Visa Platinum and AA AmEx. I was offered an $85 statement credit for each card, plus 750 bonus miles for each statement cycle in which I spend at least $750 for the next 16 months. My SO has the same cards and was offered the same retention bonus. Neither of us had done a lot of spending on these since meeting the minimums.

AA Visa

Got offered nothing to cancel. She said I should call when the fee posts instead. She even asked if I got the card just for the miles Anyway will try a bit later but I really like the card for the 10% rebate.

Called on the AA Amex, two months before fee, offered standard fee credit + 16 months of 1K bonus for 1K spend. Happy to continue my relationship

Spend in the prior year was roughly 2x what was required for bonus.

Called to cancel Citi AA Plat today, as I have not been using it. Offered $95 credit after 5 transactions within 90 days, and decided to keep the card.

Incidentally, I was hit by unauthorized usage last month (maybe repercussion of a data breech a little while back) and changed account numbers. This was worrisome, but Citi's fraud prevention seemed to catch the problem pretty quickly based on spending patterns.

I'm wondering now whether there may be some kind of special Citi AA points offer when the AA/US merger goes through 3d quarter, and whether it would be better to have a current account, or not, so as to take advantage of what might come along??

I took the 10K offer.
My reasoning was I'm gonna essentially get 2TYP/$ with flight points in making 3K in purchases and I get about 100 bucks back with 10K points.
+1

These were the only 2 deals they could offer at this time, so I'm going to call back again in a few weeks to see if they have changed. Last month I was able to get a statement credit of $125 on my other Premier card with no minimum spend, plus 16 months of 500 extra bonus Thank You points for each month that I spend at least $500 (up to 8,000 points total). I'd prefer to have something like that, to completely offset the annual fee, than 10k in TYP. So I'm going to hold out a little longer.

Fee waiver offered, no additional incentive

Called retention line for AA MC and AX - was offered $95 statement credit only, and did not accept.
I may renew depending on the welcome back offer.

I called the retention number and was offered $125 statement credit after spending $4500 in 3 months. I did about 10k spending over the course of the year. I took the offer. The CR rep was very chatty and went on and on about the benefts of the TY Premier card.

I called a few hours ago, only offered the 5k and 10k TY points options but not a statement credit. Well, probably because I still have 3 months left before AF hit.

I figured that the offer was a no-cost method to keep my miles alive for another year.....
I got the same offer for the $50 renewal fee on my gold Visa signature card today. I am also earning 3X AA miles (up to 2,500 bonus) on select purchases through 06/30/13, so it was nice to be able to keep the card.

Out of curiously, has anyone received any retention offer or spending challenge on the no-fee hilton cards? I know the odds are slim to none, but I will likely be calling about cancelling soon and wanted to see.

Please feel free to point me to another thread or better search query if its already been discussed!
