What it is

Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

The Process

In order to start the process, call the number on the back of the card and explain that you wish to cancel your card (because _________. If you provide a specific reason, AF, want to concentrate on cards with more miles, etc. they can focus on offers that meet your goals in calling).

Being vague and saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card," or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion. Just because you say you want to cancel does not mean that you have to.

You will generally be sent to a Retention Specialist who has a list of offers (or none) for each card based on your history with Citi, use of the card, etc. Offers may include statement credits, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending or purchases on the card.

You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568 and avoid the front line customer service reps. Directly calling retention appears to no longer work. Please report if you are able to get through.

Tips

Be aware that Retention Specialist are compensated based on the number/percent of card holders they can retain and to some extent based on the offers they use. These are people with jobs who can be helpful but have little discretion in what is available although some discretion in which offers they tell you about.

Unless the Retention Specialist is being a complete &#*@%, you should probably accept an offer and then close via SM so that you don't ding the rep for something over which they have little control. You can ask the same rep about multiple cards of different varieties, even AA and HHonors, although personal and business cards are handled by different groups.

Some reps will tell you all available offers, others with offer you the one that seems to best fit what you requested, others will offer the least lucrative first and then wait. So, vven if you like a specific offer, it is probably worth saying, "I like that but are there any other offers?" to see if there is something better or something that can be added. They will not waive the AF but will often give you a statement credit that covers or partially covers the fee.

For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

For older reports see Citi retention offer reports [2009-2013].

Citi Hhonors Reserve.

Minimal spend post initial bonus. Offered 5k points for $1,500 spend in 3 months. After annual fee posted in month 13.

With the standard 3 points per purchase, that's 9,500 points for $1,500 spend. Or about $47 in value. Takes away half the annual fee at least.

They offered 5000 bonus points with $1500 spend in 3 months. I requested annual fee waiver, but they would not offer any statement credit.
Transferred the credit line and closed account.

Call since $95 annual fee has posted on AA platinum MC. Was offered either $95 credit with $95 purchase in next month or 7500 miles with $1000 purchase in 3 months. Couldn't decide which one to take...

miles would be worth it. Maybe you could ask for the statement credit and the points for a certain amount of spend with a call to the supervisor?

Called after $95 AF posted for AA Platinum Select MC. Spent a few hundred over the required minimum to get the bonus in the early months and nothing since then.

Offered $95 statement credit after spending $95 and then $1K spend = 1k miles for the next 16 months. Took the offer but not sure how long I'll hang on to this card.

I don't MS and my current organic non-bonused spend leftover is only $1-1.5k/month (pretty happy with the permanent cards in my wallet: grandfathered Cit Forward that gets 5X on Amazon, restaurants, etc; Chase Sapphire Preferred; Chase Freedom). As a result, actually taking advantage of the $1K spend = 1K miles part of this offer would mean missing out on/greatly slowed acquisition of new cards/signing bonuses....

DW has had AA plat MC for 10 months. Main desire is to product change to Double Cash card. Both a rep and his supervisor said, "Can't do that until you've had the card 18 months." DW said, "Okay, so what you're telling me is I should cancel this card TODAY and simply apply for the card I want." Supervisor offered 3,000 bonus AA miles in exchange for $500 spend in 3 months. DW accepted. Will revisit in 2 months when AF posts.

Called for a retention offer after spending only a little post meeting the minimum spend requirement. My AA MC Platinum card got the $95 statement credit after spending $95 and 1,000 bonus miles per month after spending $1,000 in that month for 16 months offer. I accepted.

Not exactly a retention offer but can you imagine a scenario where some type of offer would be made on the Double Cash card - and if so what in the world could it be?

I can see the call now... "Yes, I'm considering closing this account ..." to which the rep says, "Ok, thanks. No 2% for you, goodbye."

I've had the card a good long while with a fair amount of spend ($2k-$3k per month).

I called multiple times over the last 6 weeks on my 1st AA Platinum Select MC hoping for the $95 + 1k/$1k/mo for 16 mos, but no dice

A few days ago, however, I was offered 3k miles for absolutely nothing and took it. The miles posted in another 2-3 days, and I took the opportunity to downgrade my card to a Bronze (while receiving a refund of the $95 AF ^)

I see reports of guys getting spend offers even before the 1 year kick in. Do you call asking to cancel the card and get the retention offers or is there any other way to get the offers? I called the number on back of the card and asked them to check if there is any offers on my card and all I got was some 0% APR ones which I am not interested in.

Yes, you tell them you want to cancel the card. That switches them into retention mode. Often they'll transfer you to a retention specialist. Yes, you can get offers before you've held the card for 12 months, though you do have a bit more leverage waiting until the annual fee is posted because then you can ask for it to be reimbursed.

Tried calling in - the person who answered said they could actually go ahead and close the account. I asked to speak with retention and they put me on hold. Came back and said "it appears that retention can't even take the call."

I'll HUCA but anyone else experience this? I have a TON of spend on my other Citi Exec card, don't really see any point in keeping this card w/ $95 annual fee except I've had it a while (not my oldest card though)
