When do Choice points expire?

I saw in another thread that Choice Privilege points expire. Since that thread was about the booking window, I did not want to hijack it. After having searched the choice site in vain, I could not find it, but that if you don't use Choice in an 18 month period they may cancel the account.

Does anyone have more info for a slow-poke like me?

From the Choice Privileges Program Rules and Regulations (link: http://www.choicehotels.com/ires/en-US/html/GPRules):

Choice Privileges points expire on December 31, two years after the year in which they were deposited into your account unless forfeited or canceled earlier due to membership inactivity or otherwise in accordance to these rules and regulations.

Thanks *flyer!

So if I made points this January 2008, would they expire 12/31 of 2010, or 2011, you think?

Another point to keep in mind is that they expire regardless of your stay activity.

You can call customer service and they will tell you when and how many points are scheduled to expire.

I did this as soon as I read on FlyerTalk Choice points expire and found out I have about 60K going to expire at the end of this year.

Absolutely.
I am actually writing this from my points-paid room. Actual hotel accounts are unsafe places to harbour points. I prefer CC accounts, but make an exception for SPG due to their liberal airline transfer policies.

The website account activity view provides information on how many points are expiring and when as well.

Just to clarify: The main My Account page doesn't show that. You have to click on View Recent Statements "Go" and look at the statements pop-up to see that. Then, scroll down to the Account Summary section, and at the right it breaks down into how many points expire each year (it'll only list years in which points will expire, so if you have no points expiring this year, it won't list 12/31/08, but if you have points you earned last year and points your earned this year it will list both 12/31/09 and 12/31/10).

Furthermore, it's complicated by the fact that you can't even "Go" to View Recent Statements for a quarter in which you don't have point earnings. So if you earned points last year but none so far this year, you may have to switch from Current Activity to the last period with activity to see this display. (Such a "no activity" quarter can happen either if you do nothing at Choice, or even if you stay a lot at Choice but only earn miles that quarter!)

OTOH, since you can see this for statements going back about a year and a half, by looking at old staements compared to the most recent one, you can see whether you had points that were going to expire that you've since burned!

They will forfeit your points after the time period, I can tell you firsthand. I even contacted them and they refused to reinstate my points. Another reason for me to stick to Priority Club.
