Duplicate Reservation

I have an issue with Choice and thought this might be good place to ask.

Back in January I made a reservation. I have copy of original reservation, wrote the confirmation number down in calendar and have confirmation email saved.

I later had to cancel it and have the cancellation number written down.

I found a charge for the room on my credit card after the date I had planned on staying and called hotel. They said they show I had canceled the reservation, but there was a second identical reservation and they gave me the number. They said it was a thrid party reservation and that was all the info they had. I went on line to Choice and it said it could not supply any info for that number. So, I called Choice and I was told this second reservation was made the day after the original. They followed up with a letter saying there system was checked and they had no issues with their email confirmation system. No other information as to the reservation. I am sending a letter asking for more information on this second reservation and will see how they respond.

So, I am stumped beacuse I cannot see why I would have made another reservation without having any information saved or written down. Plus I looked and I was not near a computer most of the day the second reservation was made.

I have disputed charge and am process of sending in letter, but thought I would post a note here to see if anybody else ever ran into an issue with duplicate reservation such as this.

I am aware the hotel would have been full the night when the original reservation was made and I am happy to pay if it can be shown I had made the reservation.

You've initiated a chargeback. I would not do anything else as that can only gum up the system. The property, if it wishes to pursue the chargeback, will need to document the second reservation for the CC issuer. In the meantime, you presumably have a temporary credit so you aren't paying for the room.

If the chargeback succeeds, you are done. If the chargeback fails, all your other options remain open.

In the meantime, double check your email for the day the second reservation was made (and perhaps 1-2 days after) just to make sure there isn't any odd email regarding the second reservation. Check your email spam filter to be certain.

I would worry about the third-party aspect of the second reservation. Surely the hotel can tell you which third-party made the reservation. Do you use this third-party channel? Was the third-party reservation in your name or did it just use your credit card number? Also, aren't most third-party reservations prepaid? Could it be that an insider was testing your credit card number with the intention of making more charges on your account?

Thanks for replies.

When I saw the charge I contacted Choice who told me to deal with the hotel. Hotel told me they saw first reservation cancelled and then told me about the second one. They said they had nothing but the confirmation number. So I called Choice and they said the confirmation number was theirs and could only tell me the date it was made. No other info. Original reservation was made back in January and the stay was to be end of September. I do check my card every other day for any unusally activity. Nothing yet except this additional charge.

I have checked my emails for all of this year as I keep everything important in files. Found the email for the first one, including a forward of it to person I was going with, and no notes on second one. I also keep a notebook and write everything down in order and went back to January and found where I made first reservation and nothing on the second. If I had found anything, I would have let the charge go through and blame my self.

I did dispute and will report back when I hear something. I will not do anything with Choice until I hear back, maybe it will be cleared up.

I asked here because I just wondered if anybody else had this issue as it seems very odd to me.

I too am wondering if some employee had done something and thats I why I thought I would check here to see if anybody else has had issue. The insider thought is in my mind.

Just a follow up. I checked on line the other day and my credit card company did reverse the charges and said they found in favor of me in their investigation.
