PEK Transit Visa Requirements

We are traveling at the end of June ATL-YYZ-PEK-SIN with an overnight in PEK. We arrive at 4PM and depart at 8AM the following day in PEK----Mrs. PLTHOO and I are US Passport Holders.

Do we need to apply for a Chinese Visa to enter Beijing for the night?

Any help is appreciated as all consulate and embassy websites were very confusing on what is required for simple transits requiring exit of the airport.

Thank you!

If you exit the airport at PEK you will need a Visa.

If you were simply transiting less than 48 hours in PVG you could do a transit visa on arrival IIRC.

Your info is the same as what we have been reading on the embassy websites, however multiple travelers indicate a transit less than 24 hours is OK and you can leave the airport. The *A, Air Canada, and other airline websites use a tool to determine the entry requirements for a specific itinerary....ours states:

National U.S.A. US) /Embarkation CANADA CA)
Transit CHINA PEOPLE'S REP.) CN)
Destination MALDIVES MV)
ALSO CHECK DESTINATION INFORMATION BELOW

CHINA PEOPLE'S REP.) CN)

Visa not required provided:
- continuing to a third country by same/first connecting

aircraft within 24 hours; and
- holding confirmed ticket and documents required for

onward journey.
Leaving the airport transit area is allowed.
Overnight facilities are available outside the airport.

However, and only applicable if arriving at and departing from:

Shanghai Hongqiao or Pu Dong airports:
visa not required provided continuing to a third country

within 48 hours and holding confirmed onward ticket and

all documents required for next destination.

Less than 24 hours should be fine. I don't speak from experience, but I believe our old China hand, Moondog, has discussed it in previous posts in this section. Please do try a search and I am sure you will be able to find it.

I strongly recommend getting a hotel, putting your bags down and seeing some of the city, especially if its your first time. Feel free to PM me for ideas or look around this forum.
