So will new L-visas utilize the same pre-COVID application? I'm glad I won't have to apply for a new Chinese visa, but I really don't want to apply for that new Q-visa. It's more expensive and asks a lot of intrusive questions?
I noted the differences somewhere upthread, the main difference is it asks work history and educational history. === separate question Per https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/35089896-post6947.html Turkey is bad. Are there other ‘bad’ countries for the visa application? It asks where you have been in past 5 years |

There's a sample new application form at this link. Note that if you answer "Yes" to any of the questions, a box asking for details opens up.

No point filling the coffers of any visa issing government unnecessarily ;) |

Just incase - and not sure of the context of the last sentence - as far as I know a Chinese Visa in an expied passport remains valid provided that the new passport correlates with the existing one.

Oh? I had no idea.
Q14. I have renewed my passport now but the Chinese visa on my old one is still valid. Can I go to China with both passports without applying for a new visa? A: You can travel to China on the expired passport containing valid Chinese visa in combination withthe new passport, providedthat the identity information (name, date of birth, gender, nationality) on both passport identical. If there is change to any of the above details, you must apply for a new visa. |
Wait, so the old 10 year visas are now valid?

Appointment wait times in Toronto right now is a couple of months! Someone suggested to me to just go to Hong Kong first and get the visa from there. Anyone know if that is possible and if wait times would be less? Hoping to go asap.

I would do Q2 if possible. It's 1 document (invitation letter) vs potentially multiple (flight bookings + hotel), plus you'll get a longer length of stay each time (120 days for Q2 vs 30-60 days for L).
EDIT: I do want to add before I forget. These were the docs that I had to bring with me to the appointment at the Vancouver Visa Centre for a Q2 visa:

Thanks again for the recommendation. I went to my appointment today and got a pick-up slip that confirms the 10 year visa (well, actually 8 year somehow? I don't know if the embassy will actually give me until the end of my passport) and 120 days per entry.

You get the full 10 years. Just present both the valid passport and the old one with the visa. I've had a bit of trouble with the airline people and Chinese hotels but the immigration people know how it works and hasn't given us a bit of trouble.
