for the USA they use the COVA system now for all visas. https://cova.mfa.gov.cn/qzCoCommonCo...x&locale=en_US

I noted the differences somewhere upthread, the main difference is it asks work history and educational history.

Turkey is bad. Are there other ‘bad’ countries for the visa application? It asks where you have been in past 5 years

I don't think that a turkish stamp will be a problem at all, maybe only if you have multiple of them in your passport and show up directly at a chinese border without a valid visa. My wife and three of her colleagues applied for their M/Q visa at a german visa center last week and all was asked about the turkish stamps in their passports, but a simple "work" or "vacation" answer was enough to get their visa.

Is the current L-visa app asking more questions than before?

There's a sample new application form at this link. Note that if you answer "Yes" to any of the questions, a box asking for details opens up.

Since my previously issued visa is now valid again, I won't have to apply for another visa until 2026. I asked since it seems like some people are going through the application process again. I'll renew the appropriate visa for me once my new passport is renewed.

Just incase - and not sure of the context of the last sentence - as far as I know a Chinese Visa in an expied passport remains valid provided that the new passport correlates with the existing one.
No point filling the coffers of any visa issing government unnecessarily ;)

Here we go, confrimation from the UK Chinese Embassy in their FAQs

Q14. I have renewed my passport now but the Chinese visa on my old one is still valid. Can I go to China with both passports without applying for a new visa?

A: You can travel to China on the expired passport containing valid Chinese visa in combination withthe new passport, providedthat the identity information (name, date of birth, gender, nationality) on both passport identical. If there is change to any of the above details, you must apply for a new visa.

Wait, so the old 10 year visas are now valid?

Per that Discover commercial, "awesome sauce"! When renewing mine, will just carry the old one; anyway, I like that pic much better since I'm 10 years younger!

Appointment wait times in Toronto right now is a couple of months! Someone suggested to me to just go to Hong Kong first and get the visa from there. Anyone know if that is possible and if wait times would be less? Hoping to go asap.

I would do Q2 if possible. It's 1 document (invitation letter) vs potentially multiple (flight bookings + hotel), plus you'll get a longer length of stay each time (120 days for Q2 vs 30-60 days for L).

Thanks again for the recommendation. I went to my appointment today and got a pick-up slip that confirms the 10 year visa (well, actually 8 year somehow? I don't know if the embassy will actually give me until the end of my passport) and 120 days per entry.

EDIT: I do want to add before I forget. These were the docs that I had to bring with me to the appointment at the Vancouver Visa Centre for a Q2 visa:
  1. Appointment confirmation (you get a PDF when you create an appointment with a barcode at the top)
  2. Full Visa application, sign the first and last pages (also don't forget your High School information... I missed that and had to write it down with a pen)
  3. Invitation letter using format from their website from my mother-in-law, and photocopy of both front and back side of her Chinese National ID
  4. Current Canadian passport + photocopy, additionally as I recently became Canadian, I also had to provide a copy of my Canadian Citizenship certificate.
  5. Old passport (my other nationality) with previous Chinese visa (was single-entry, already expired visa) and photocopy of old passport and visa (they kept my old physical passport as well)
  6. Driver's License + photocopy.
  7. A copy of my wife's passport + copy of marriage certificate. They also wanted to see proof of relationship between her and my mother-in-law, but after letting the agent know that she doesn't have a birth certificate, they said it was ok.
  8. A physical picture in the required size.
They asked me a bunch of documents they shouldn't be asking for (like proof of kinship for Q2 visas or Citizenship Certificate) but thankfully I had all of them with me so I just handed them over when requested. Will update once I pick up my passport.

The old one will still work.

You get the full 10 years. Just present both the valid passport and the old one with the visa. I've had a bit of trouble with the airline people and Chinese hotels but the immigration people know how it works and hasn't given us a bit of trouble.

Not if you're Canadian, it's reciprocal as that's how Canada issues visas to Chinese nationals.
