I spent 2 months working in North East China and have also holidayed (on a different trip) in Beijing, Shanghai and Yunnan. I have never had any problems and have felt more worried in many US cities.
I always wear my engagement ring, wedding ring, eternity ring and a good watch on holiday. (Don't flaunt them at all but I just like wearing them.) Jewellery is for wearing, not keeping stored in a box (though admittedly I have other pieces which don't work for every day). And anyway, if I stored it at home instead of taking it on holiday, the house might just get burgled while we're away!

Yes it is all true. Many beautiful foreign women are walking around China with missing fingers. As far as I know, no one has found their correct finger yet. However, my wife informs me that it is also necessary to not wear ear rings as the Chinese will rip them out of your ear - even while you are sleeping.
China is an evil country whose sole purpose is to rule the world totally funded by stolen jewellery. It is all true. We read it on the internet.
