Pissing off your own people is never a "win" for the country in the long term. At some point, people reach a breaking point where they won't tolerate any more crap and they overthrow the government. China has a history of one dynasty replacing the overthrown one, but the people also have a history of waiting until stuff gets so bad that they have to violently overthrow the government instead of having an orderly transition. And that's what happens when you allow the government to get away with so much crap in the first place. Saw one of my Chinese friends today and he said he heard some woman (a PRC citizen with a US green card) had her green card cut when she was trying to leave. Her daughter, who has a US passport, could have left, but is too young to fly by herself. And even if they somehow do get to zero because of a miracle, the cost of doing this keeps getting bigger and bigger each time. |

Isn't the green card like a USA passport in that it's the property of the USA government? Will a USA consulate in China replace her green card? Will the government do anything since they're effectively preventing a USA citizen (the child) from leaving? OTOH, if the child has dual citizenship or the Chinese government can claim the child as a citizen, I guess not much can be done.

No matter what China does, Omicron will win out. My wife and I were vacinated (Moderna) and had 4 additional boosters (Moderna). About 10 days ago, she flew EWR-TPA and the next morning came down with Covid. She transmitted it to me and I was positive 2 days after her. So when they say it is highly contagious, it is an understatement. The theroy that this does not end until virtually everyone gets it is probably correct..This has the potential for a disaster in China and, by extension, the rest of the world.
Note: That both Sondra and I were put on Paxlovid and symptoms abated within 2 days. Truly a wonder drug. If anyone hs the ability to source some and put it away 'just in case", it is worth considering. |

Another update.
My Q hotel room offers the best views of any Shanghai Q hotels. Bar none, as an FTer living in China said after I shared the pictures in our WeChat group. The views are spectacular. I see the empty streets, parked cars in the community, and seemingly non-flowing Huangpu River. Shanghai, the most modern city in China with 26 million, simply freezes. I talked with the GM during one of my “yard time” strolls last month where I was able to walk up and down Hengshan in front of my complex. He said the procedure is to contact the hotel, send them your negative test results and he will liaise with the neighborhood on your behalf. If the neighborhood gives the green light you can stay there. I’m sure there are other hotels like this in Shanghai by they are few and far between as most hotels have been requisitioned by the government to give a place for the modern symbol of China, the snowmen, to sleep. |
