Please update us on this thread as to whether or not you get a new visa to come to China. I am curious as to what falls under the economic/trade necessity heading. I’m guessing that unless you’re personally invited by Chairman Xi, you won’t be getting a visa.

Will do - I should find out about my colleagues next week too. I doubt that it's quite as restrictive as being Xi's invitees only! Though I have no idea if we specifically will make the cut or not. There is pressure to get the economy back up to speed, and a lot of important businesses in China have foreign suppliers or customers. Not everything can be done remotely, especially when physical machines and equipment are involved.

I think if you get a visa, you can go. This is from the announcement linked upthread:

Entry by foreign nationals with visas issued after this announcement will not be affected.

BTW if he's a ROC citizen (which he probably is), then he's not considered to be a foreigner. He would not use his passport to use China and there would be no visa on that passport.

I don't know. If you are the largest employer in China>1million employees..most likely there is a red carpet waiting. No visa Amex black.

Any information for people who are traveling from inside China to Beijing? Is there a quarantine requirement? I've been in Heilongjiang since last October and wanted to visit an embassy (passport renewal) in the next week or two.

An update: I did successfully make the trip to Beijing and back without need for quarantine (still have my green health code even!). This was at the end of March so I won't say too much just because it's likely out of date (from reports, travellers from Harbin might have a tough time leaving the city sans quarantine at the moment), but it would pay to directly contact any hotel you wish to stay at to see if you'll be accepted.

Thanks for circling back and giving the update. We had an employee fly to Harbin and back this week to Shanghai and did not encounter any problems returning today, no one even asked questions.

guangzhou shocked me a lot

I left Shenzhen in the beggining of a Dec and later I found out that there's a virus killing people in China. I was pretty shocked and prayed for people there. I had some friends stayed there and also some of them were going to Wuhan to have a semester in local university. After all these news and virus spreading I have heard from my friends that chinese pepole avoid them (how strange, they were always amused by seeing a foreigner)... most of the dancers lost their flats there and had to sleep in the street. How could that happen? Who is driving their minds?

Does anyone have any information on whether I can quarantine in Shanghai or Guangzhou before I am allowed to enter Beijing.

I note from the PRC government announcement that flights cannot directly arrive in Beijing and must land in one of the six cities of which Shanghai and Guangzhou are not listed. What if I can fly directly in to CAN or PVG, and subject to clearing the 14-day quarantine before taking the flight to Beijing (on a separately purchased domestic ticket), would that be possible?

The following data point is a bit stale because is over 6 weeks old, but might still be useful:
-my Chinese friend flew from SYD to PVG
-upon arrival in Shanghai, she had to quarantine for 14 days in a hotel that cost only Y300 per night, which she thought was okay; there were also higher priced options on offer, but she didn't feel location or amenities were important
-she flew on to PEK on day 14 (this was a strict requirement at the time)

Are international connections possible at PVG? I have a flight from HEL to PVG in september and i'm looking to fly to KUL (via HKG) the same day as I arrive at PVG.

You can pull that off if you get a PRC visa (not easy).

Thank you for the fast reply :) Do I really need a visa if I remain airside?

As far as I know, no transit without visa at the moment in the People's Republic, unless you have a really special passport or special connections.

From UK FCO website

Entry rules in response to coronavirus (COVID-19)
Entry and transit

China has suspended entry to foreign nationals with visas issued before 27 March. The Chinese authorities have told the British Embassy in Beijing that this includes transit passengers

Thanks.

So then I assume that AY is gonna cancel my itinerary anyway because getting a visa is 'hard' according to moondog..
