No need for showing ID, just the phone? Does this apply to foreigners, too? Time will tell.
It's not real-name validation but facial recognition validation. So if foreigners can pass facial recognition on their 12306 phone app then it should work.

Since 12306 is Chinese language only and requires Chinese payment methods, this may have limited use for many foreigners.

We'll see what the exact process is over time. The important point is, no need to line up for tickets.

But apparently you'll still need paper tickets for traditional non-HSR services.

So I'll still have to go inside the train station to purchase them?

You can purchase online directly or through an agent, but for non-HSR tickets it looks like you'll continue to need to get a paper ticket in exchange at a ticketing place (or delivered, perhaps). As mentioned here before, it does seem that China Rail is experimenting with ticket machines that accept passports, so ultimately you shouldn't have to wait in line at a ticket counter to get your paper ticket, you'll be able to use a machine.

I have seen the new machines installed in train stations in Yunnan where they have overnight trains, so I am not so sure that it will be limited to high-speed trains. Time will tell.

Exiting a station yesterday, I noticed that the manual gate had disappeared: just a long row of machines, though with a staff member standing next to one. I went there and she showed me how to put my passport in a scanner slot in the gate, and what do you know, it opened. Don't know whether all the gates were so equipped; there were no signs in Chinese (or English) directing passport holders where to go, though there was a foggy loudspeaker announcement I couldn't quite grasp.

Entering there was a manual gate, so I didn't check whether passports could be used in the automatic gates there, as well.
