Minimum connect time in PVG

Greetings all -

I have some business around SE Asia and my return flight is departing PVG -> LAX at 21:20. I am looking to book a flight back from Manila but wanted to get the consensus of people who have been here before. There are a few flights that arrive PVG around 18:30 local time (note, stats say "often delayed by 30+ mins"). Is 2:50 enough time at this airport? Specifically, I haven't been there before and don't know the terminals and if you'll have to pass through passport control/customs to make a transfer...

Please advise...

Thanks,
Sean

As this appears to be on separate tickets official MCT times do not apply. You potentially may have issues with the first airline when it comes to either valid visa/exemption as they will only see the one flight and some are stubborn about separate flights. Luggage may/most likely will not be ticketed through to LAX as many airlines do not check through luggage on separate tickets.
For me personally, involving Chinese airports I wouldn't go for less than 4 hours on separate tickets and be ready to rebook. You should look at the previsions of the return flight to LAX to see if it is changeable, when it has to be changed and any costs associated.

I'm actually in Shanhai for a day, then off to singapore and manila then back home through PVG. I believe Air Asia will probably make me check my roller --- but DL will be 100% carry on - so no need to check through.

In which case, you'd have to enter China to pick up your bag, i.e. go through immigration, customs, pick up your checked bag, walk from Terminal 2 Arrivals to Terminal 1 Departures, and go through security again.

If you'll pardon the slight note of sarcasm, when travelling on separate tickets through Chinese airports, it is useful to have a valid credit card with you so that you may buy a new onward ticket.

Agree. I would never do separate ticket connections in China

I've moved this to our China forum, which is the best spot for airport-related questions.

I am even more conservative. I would not connect in China, especially PVG, even for same ticket. Short haul is very unreliable except for morning flights (arriving before noon). As far as credit cards, I always use AMEX for Cathay Pacific flights elsewhere, but AMEX, Visa, etc., didn't work when I purchased from Cathay Pacific online for POS China and I was forced to buy with Alipay.

Having traveled extensively throughout E and SE Asia I have certain red flags.

You raised three of them
  • Flying in or out of MNL
  • Transiting PVG (I usually fly in and out but that is enough)
  • AirAsia
Hedging you bet is to book MU MNL PVG which give you the best odds of making the connection as seamless as possible as MU and DL have some cross ownership and MU is a Tier 1 partner with DL.
