CAN Connection Process

When connecting JFK - CAN - MNL (both flights on China Southern) what is the process in Guangzhou? Do I need to collect my luggage and bring it up to ticketing? I'm checking heavy boxes and trying to avoid handling them until I reach Manila.

(My connection experience in Shanghai was tedious - immigration and baggage recheck - but maybe that was due to interline connection between SQ and UA.)

I've done an international - international connection in CAN before (MEL-CAN-AMS) with China Southern and my baggage was checked through. There was also a special gate for international connecting passengers that consisted of a passport inspection but not a full immigration check. Very straightforward

Your luggage can be checked towards final destination.

If i'm on two separate tickets and need to pick up bags from my first flight. Does CAN have premium line for immigration for C travelers?
How much time should I leave in between assuming the first flight is on time? I'd land around 10PM and depart at 1AM the next day. Is this sufficient time? 3 hrs?
This would be Int-Int Transfer involving passport control.

Thanks.

Layover in Guangzhou ?

Hi,

is a layover in Guangzhou ok?
Route would be CDG-CAN-CTU.
Do we have to pick up the luggage and check in once again at CAN?
Also, is a 2-hour connection sufficient?
Airline is China Southern all the way
Thanks

Moderator note.

LY777, I moved your post from its former forum to this one in order for you to see other members' experiences with this type of connection at CAN. Ocn Vw 1K, Senior Moderator.

I have done SFO-CAN-XIA international to domestic transfer all on China Southern and I did not need to pick up luggage and re-check it in.

Hello all,

Reviving an old thread to ask a couple questions :

I'm assuming CZ will through-check bags to the final destination, even if on separate tickets but all on CZ metal ? Considering FRA - CAN - TPE for an outbound leg, but with the way the pricing works out (huge difference), would be better to buy the CAN - TPE segment separately. Would 3h be sufficient ? I am guessing TPE is like HKG and treated as an int'l destination for transit purposes.

With separate ticketing they don't guaranty the connection, do they? What happens if the incoming flight is late and you no longer have a good onward ticket for TWOV? There may be a tale of woe about this somewhere in another thread.

If both flights are on CZ, they would surely step up to the plate and resolve this.

Not too worried about visa situation, as I will have one anyway- eventually spending most of the time in the mainland for tourisme anyway. Was just wondering how the experience at CAN is overall, whether it's a mild disaster like some US airports or if it's relatively efficient in terms of the experience.

Sorry. "I am guessing TPE is like HKG and treated as an int'l destination for transit purposes" sounded like you were doing TWOV.

By the way, it's Airline Ticketing 101 that if you buy separate tickets to construct your own transit even on the same airline, the airline is not obligated to help you out if you miss the second flight due to delay of the first. They might nonetheless help, but if they do it's just being gracious and you can't count on it.

I've never done an I-I connection in China, but I did I-D in CAN in June and I'm pretty sure both requires clearing immigration and re-checking bags (like the US). It wasn't too bad. Took maybe 30 minutes to clear immigration (including filling out an entry form). Another 30 minutes to find the check-in counter and check bags (in the same terminal). 3 hours would be fine in most cases.
