Urumqi
Just got back from a 4 day trip to Xinjinag. It's hot there in july !.
From BJ about a 4 hour flight west, abet more security at the airports...
Stayed at the Sheraton in Urumqi, Ok location , about 40 rmb taxi from the airport. Sheraton EL on the 27th floor has good view of the city and happy hour with cold beer.
Did two one day crop tours, one day to Turpan and the other day NW to the mountains. ( snow on the mountain tops in july ) I did see Deng Xiaopings summer cabin on the mountain lake, it was nice.
This area and city has several china minorities, thus diversity of people and local culture. But also a Burger King in the mall...

I have stayed at the Sheraton twice in the last year and it has really impressed with its service and standards. It is very close to the museum.
I like the market across the street, out the front door, under the street, half a block left and then half a block in. I have gotten great figs and raisons there, like the best I have ever had. Skip the first vendors as you enter, their prices are higher and the selection and quality no better than what you get further in. You can choose from well more than 10 kinds of raisins, some of which are incredibly good.
