Layover in Shanghai help

Hey guys,

I'll be arriving at Shanghai airport at 12:30am and then leaving around 14 hours later at 4:30pm. Am I better off just getting a hotel near the airport and spending all my time there, or should I make my way into the city and have a wander around in the morning before my flight leaves?

Thanks in advance

If it were me, I would go into the city for sure. Yes, that night time taxi fare is going to be expensive by China standards ($50), but you certainly don't want to be stuck in one of the hotels between the 2 terminals for a night and 2/3 of a day, and the Ramada is a rip off for what it is. If your departing flight were at 8a, my calculus would be different.

There is definitely nothing to do around the airport so you'll want to spend the first half of the next day in town.
You can do this by sleeping in town or at the airport. It depends in part on the time zone that you are coming from, i.e. will you be sleepy when you land. You could do as suggested above or stay at the airport hotel, get up early and jump on the Maglev, visit for a while and get the Maglev back - all without luggage.

That's actually a pretty good idea.
