I wouldn't be so worried about crowds at PVG. For whatever reason, the May holiday seems to be far more mellow than CNY, National Day, Zhongqiu, and Qiming. Furthermore, I don't know many people who travel for foreign countries over May Day.
In any event, I think your planned 730a airport arrival is good.

I routinely shoot for the one hour mark (a little longer at pek t3) and have only been burned one time in 19 years. While that was an expensive lesson (ended up buying up to f on the next flight for myself and 4 employees), I have no regrets sticking with my policy considering how much time I otherwise would have wasted hanging around Chinese airports.

In that case, the Maglev is certainly a viable option, but it won't be one of the top speed trains (is actually slower than the fastest CRH trains).

I meant to tell you about the golf carts there which are usually free for star gold but otherwise only 10 per person. Useful because ca's gates are a long walk from the main lobby.

I wouldn't have made it in 15-minute door-to-door from arriving at the airport counter to the CA Lounge without the complimentary GOLF CAR ride :-).

Being used to the solitary calm of the Maglev VIP cabin, last week proved different.
There were five of us and not a single PRC police officer on a free trip. An Aussie family of three and a rather elegant gent who could well have been an FT'er judging by his smart attire and calm behaviour (reading mobile text messages the whole journey)
The Aussie kids loved the ride and while it was supposed to be the meditative part of a hectic day for myself, their (loud) joy was so genuine I melted.
Longyang Rd. station is as awful as before with all the construction going on...Reserve a bit more time if coming or going by subway as the main entrance towards the Maglev is closed due to renovations.
