7、 In case a foreign national has entered China with the 72-hour transit visa exemption issued by the Capital Airport of Beijing, can he or she apply to leave China from an airport in Shanghai?
Answer: A foreign national with the 72-hour transit visa exemption is not allowed to leave the city where the stopover is permitted. Therefore, a foreign national obtaining the 72-hour transit visa exemption at the Capital Airport of Beijing shall leave China from the same airport in Beijing within the permitted time of stay and may not leave China from an airport in Shanghai.

I am trying to point out to OP, that he runs a real risk of a problem even if he is in China only for 24 hours, because the arriving city and departing city are not the same
Again:

1) The OP has NOTHING to worry about as long as he arrives China with proof an onward flight with a scheduled departure <24 hours from his scheduled arrival
2) We are NOT talking about 72-hour TWOV, but rather the basic product which allows intra-China transfers

TWOV (Transit Without Visa) - UNDER 24 HOURS: Visa required, except for Holders of confirmed onward tickets for a max. transit [[TIRULES/R32]] time of 24 hours. Transit incl. two stops, with a total transit time of 24 hours, within China (People's Rep.) is permitted

This is from the Chinese Embassy regarding transit without visa. The TWOV is valid for specific cities, and those cities only.
Moondog is correct.
dh01, sorry but you have some fundamental misunderstandings about how Chinese TWOV works and should therefore be careful about dispensing advice.

As for skchin, I can't tell from the information given since he did not give time of arrival at Shanghai PVG. But assuming it is sometime after 07:30 am, subsquently getting to PEK at 23:30, then leaving PEK at 07:30 the next morning, he is good to go without a visa since the three basics are met:
--total transit time of 24 hours or less for all of China, for a multiple-stop TWOV.
--entered China at PVG from SEA and departed PEK for NRT. USA and Japan are two different countries.
--has confirmed onward ticket for the exit to Japan

I know this thread is 6 years old....is anyone still there? Can I do an immediate (2 hour) turn from DTW-PEK-DTW? I assume I'll need to clear immigration and security both ways. DL188 arrives at 5pm and DL189 leaves at 7pm on Nov. 4th. US citizen with a Chinese visa, flying DeltaOne on the return which I hope gets me shorter lines. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Sure, you could do this, but are whatever fruits Delta might be dangling before you honestly worth the torture? (At least 6 years ago, DL miles were still of some value.)

I do a lot of short haul flights on DL, and this will re-qualify me for Platinum which helps with same day changes, standby, and upgrades. Plus I got my first A350 Suite on the ride home for 45k miles. That's worth it to me....YMMV.

Well, if you're going to put yourself through the misery of that hell hole of an airport, couldn't you at least slot in a night so you can eat some real food and maybe take a shower before you get back on an airplane?
