my charity idea

I teach English on the weekends to rich kids and the money is good. But recently the kid at convenience store across the street from me asked me if I could teach him. I really can't but I gave him a computer instead.

Not sure if this is tongue in cheek?

Not sure the kid in the convenience store really needs to have material-orientated stereotypes reinforced -- and if the idea was that he would use the computer to learn English -- you are very much mistaken. My lab is run in English, and some of my students speak really good English, but they still browse 90%+ of the time in Chinese -- very little curiosity about the outside world perspective.

PS how much do you charge?

Somehow I doubt Dashan needs to do much by way of English teaching...

Most chinese kids have a computer. At least around here, they all seem to have ipads, macbooks, latest gadgets.

Giving a kid a old computer (assuming you didn't purchase a new computer for the kid) - how is that charity......

What is the going rate for teaching right now? I get forced to teach children of guanxi and I charge 250 RMB or teach for free. (For parents with useful guanxi, I teach for free)

I charge 300 per hour, which is pretty nice.

But, spending 8 hours at Hongqiao sucks!

Next update from Nanning (my new home).

Are there good on-line tools (equivalent of duolingo) for learning English? I had a feeling duolingo was going to add Chinese to the languages you can learn.
