the only food I bring to China with me is breakfast cereal (hugely expensive here) and cheese (again, hugely expensive, as is all imported dairy). I accept cereal takes a lot of room but I usually throw in a couple of boxes of something like all-bran which I ration once a week. It all depends on how much room you have.
For deodorant I buy a rock crystal (available from Wallgreens) - it's small and one container lasts a whole year. It is very effective and easy to carry: http://www.thecrystal.com/store_locator.cfm
