thanks again to all!
so i can use the iphone and ipad without worries, have adapters already that I used in Japan and europe, will check out and buy another for china if needed
Main concern was being able to use face time on Ipad, sister is mentally challenged as well as deaf and i like to keep the routine every day face time every day. Computers and Skype are too difficult for her. Usually go to her home most days but of course can't with trips but she is fine with others checking in.

We're trying to do FT last week and video was fine both ways but due to hardware audio issues on our end, we switched to Skype on the laptop - and we could hear & see them just them, but the party in the mainland could only hear us and video was "loading ..." and the images never appeared.
This happened on both a hotel connection and home-based one - equally slow with high latency ... inconclusive as to whether filtering played a part or not.
