Any suggestions for extracting favorites from an iPad?
My wife has gone a bit nuts in saving things and has filled up most of the memory. Is there anything other than her forwarding me all the saved stuff? (I've got a PC with more TB than she has GB.) |
I recently downloaded WeChat on my phone and tried to add my CC with no luck. It says I have to download the China, Hong Kong or Macau version to accept USA credit cards. My question is, if I wait till I arrive in Hangzhou to download this, how will the WeChat verification work if I dont have a valid phone number in China? Thanks!
|
I am not sure, but I believe the China, HK and Macau versions work with China, HK and Macau numbers.

Bumping this up as there are persistent rumors of upcoming Wechat block in US. Many local wechat users are looking into transition to telegram and whatsapp which in turn are blocked in china. I think skype messaging works in both - no idea how user friendly that thing is. I think we are gonna need VPN here in US
This is a seriously messed up world that's going backwards. |
You can message back and forth on Skype, but it's not designed as a "mass messaging" platform like WeChat. Hard to see it becoming popular.
|
I guess you could always use a VPN when you're in the US to use WeChat (and other services their government doesn't like)

I haven't used Skype or MSN (if it still exists) in years because WeChat is categorically better than both. Sure, you need to remember not to post pictures of Pooh, but this isn't such a tough ask. Apart from the guys in the FT group, my mom is the only US based person I know who uses WeChat. We usually just chat, but the call quality is excellent. I use google hangouts (with my HK sims) when I want to make calls to US phone numbers. Since this is not a protected forum, I will refrain from going into detail about taboo topics, but sex, politics, and religion are obvious.

Blocked in india as of last weekend...

well here in US these days it's not about topics but fearmongering and politics in general.. visas/green cards for chinese students, "chinese army" affiliations and "espionage", consulate closure and it apparently very likely block of tiktok and wechat... not sure what means can be used here in US to block access - aside of sporting events viewing restrictions i never encountered such thing...

I recal reading that accounts linked to non-chinese phones do not get the same scrutiny - some of my friends here post stuff that is likely taboo in china

I have successfully used WhatsApp, FB and what not with a foreign SIM. I'm pretty sure VPN will allow that to work as well.

2. Network effect. 3. Winner takes all. This goes a long way to explain WeChat’s dominance in China. |

This came through on my Youtube. What are the implications? While I don't trust having WeChat on my phone and don't really use it, this can be really inconvenient for a lot of people.

I disagree with you. China often talk about reciprocity in international relations. Since FB and Twitter is banned in the Mainland, it's only fair that WeChat is banned as well.

When they go low, we go lower

That doesn't even make any sense. How are we going lower if we ban WeChat? That's ridiculous.
TT is a different beast. I don't fully understand it yet, but it has serious momentum. Basically, during the course of the past 20 years, we went from actually calling each other to SMS, msn, and finally wx. Tik tok is the new frontier. |

This is what I meant and we're talking about 2020 not what had happened in the past. |
I totally agree with moondog.
Unfortunatately, the economical assault by the US dictatorial regime against WeChat does involve politics. |

Wechat is obviously strong in China (one billion members), but it doesn't have a strong presence in other markets, apart from Brazil and Argentina (thank David Wu for this).
Tiktok somehow managed to penetrate the US. I don't think the US will block them. |

On a semirelated note Haotong Li took the lead at PGA championship while wearing wechat cap. Awesome timing :)

With regards to Tiktok, they are in talks with Microsoft to take over their US, Australian, New Zealand Operations. There was a report Microsoft wants to purchase all of Tiktok. They are floating a 30-50 Billion dollar price. I guess we will see what happens to Tiktok and Wechat in 45 days. On a side note, India really went to town banning dozens of Chinese apps.

Are they already blocking? I had to reboot and it won't come up on my PC now--it wants confirmation on my phone but the confirmation request never shows up.
