Welcome to FT, joshnz!
I've moved your inquiry over to the China forum for further discussion as the Mileage Run Deals forum is for posting good fare finds and deals members can use as a Mileage Run to bank frequent flyer points/miles. The sticky at the top of the MR Deals forum, reviews how to post in that forum plus the MR Discussion subforum.
Included in that sticky is a note that FT is not really set up to ask for 'fare requests', meaning fares between two cities at a set time which is more the role of a travel agent.
You are of course encouraged to watch the MR Deals forum to see if any deals to pop up for your travel plans and create new threads in the China forum to ask others about questions you may have about your trip. The FT search feature may also help your see if the same topic has been covered by others recently.
I hope that helps and enjoy your time on FT planning this and hopefully many more trips.

i am from the same neck of the woods as you, am currently in china
my ticket was AKL-(SYD)-HKG, then a overland trip, CSX-PVG, PVG-(SYD)-AKL cost was 1480NZD per person on QF. Before i booked there was a another option i was looking at for AKL-HKG, CSX-PEK, PEK-AKL on a combination of AirNZ and AirChina going for about 1450NZD
your question is too open ended, need to know where you are going and when. we missed the busy period by a week (early in october it was school holidays in NZ/AUS as well as the mega golden week of china when national day matched up back to back with mid autumn festival) and flights were upwards of 1900-2000 for just return AKL-HKG
just play around on all the booking sites with your dates and destination

Do a search on ITA http://matrix.itasoftware.com/search.htm
You can search a broad range of flights to get a sense of prices and times. It all depends on when you go and where you're flying to, but it showed a non-stop on Air New Zealand from Auckland to Shanghai for ~1648 NZ$ in mid March. Less if you're willing to stop somewhere.
