Beijing - weekend trips from there?

Might be going to Beijing for a few weeks for work, and was wondering if its possible to do weekend trips to other countries in Asia.

I am thinking - leaving late friday night from Beijing, and then arriving back in Beijing late sunday night.

Are these places possible/easy to do, both in terms of flights and seeing a lot of tourist sites in 1.5-2days:
South Korea
Tokyo
Taiwan
Thailand

Any other countries that you might recommend? (went to Singapore and Hong Kong already last year)

Thanks

It's not as easy as you make it sound because there are not many Friday evening flights to anywhere in the region. I suggest you do something simple like Shanghai, Shenzhen, or Qingdao.

Can I ask why tokyo is out -- I've never actually been, but it's only a three hour flight...is it the scale of the city?

Most flights leave at around 9a, and return at 6p. This drill won't fit the OP's schedule. Yes, he could fly to HND instead of NRT, but this entails quite a bit more on the cost front.

In my opinion, even if the scheduling worked out, flying into NRT would just waste too much time in getting to and from Tokyo to make it worthwhile for a weekend. You can generally figure on ~2.5 hours from landing to central Tokyo by the time you clear immigration and get a train/bus.

HND, though, is quite doable from a logistics perspective, as immigration queues are practically non-existent and it's only about 30 minutes from civilisation. Pricing-wise, these flight are indeed exorbitant; I've found they're generally one of the best values for mileage redemption. On ANA, for instance, a PEK to HND redemption is 20,000 miles R/T in economy.

Beijing is spectacularly poorly located for weekend trips to other countries. It's not even well-positioned for weekend trips to much of China. I suggest you look domestic for interesting places, and stay within China. Much more cost and time-effective.
