I don't know anything about buses from DLC/SHE to DDG but I do visit the borderlands with North Korea somewhat regularly. Personally I think you'd be best served flying into SHE and taking a train/bus from there. SHE is more of a transportation hub for Liaoning than DLC because of its central location. From SHE it takes about 4 hours by train and I'd expect it to be similar by bus.

Do you actually have to go to Dandong or do you just want to peek across the border and get a glimpse into North Korea? There is some interesting (mainly Chinese) stuff in Dandong but if Korean stuff is what you're after you'd be best served in Yanji/Tumen rather than Dandong.

I've only done it from Shenyang. You just go to the main bus station in Shenyang (right next to the North Train Station) and there are busses leaving all the time. It takes a couple hours on mainly expressways to get to Dandong. You could also fly from PEK if you hit the right day, I believe there are 3 or 4 flights a week.

I'm sure the setup in Dalian is the same. Just go to the main bus station in town and they'll get you there.

Beats me...I've never been to Dalian, my trips to Dandong have been from Shenyang. I'd recommend doing it from Shenyang anyhow as it's a shorter journey and all highway.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested flying to DDG yet. There are daily flights from PEK, PVG, and SZX, and the airport is supposedly really close to the city.
