Question about transfer in PVG

Hi all,

I am checking the following itinerary (Hong Kong to Chicago, connecting at PVG, to be booked through an online TA) and would like to know if it is feasible if I have checked bags?

China Eastern Airlines (Flight 8922) Operated by Shanghai Airlines
Hong Kong (HKG) to Shanghai Pu Dong (PVG)
01:40pm -22Dec, Wed - 04:00pm -22Dec, Wed

American Airlines (Flight 288)
Shanghai Pu Dong (PVG) to Chicago OHare (ORD)
06:00pm -22Dec, Wed - 05:15pm -22Dec, Wed

I would also like to know if my bags can get through PVG without collecting them myself? Do I need to go through immigration and security check at PVG? And will the checked baggage allowance be the China Eastern Airlines' one or AA's one?

Thanks in advance!

Longest sector rule.

For the rest of your questions, there are many threads on the topic at hand (one started yesterday iirc).

I would aim to minimise problems by booking on one of the 15 or so nonstops on this route operated by Oneworld members Cathay Pacific and Dragonair. Booking on Shanghai Airlines, you are likely to have to reclaim bags and go through immigration at PVG.

With Cathay/Dragonair there is a greater chance of having bags checked through, and therefore avoiding immigration (you will need to go through security). You should, when collecting your BP for the AA flight at PVG, present your baggage receipts, even if the bags are thru-checked, to make sure they make it onto the AA flight.

Baggage allowance will be that applying to the first flight you check-in for, unless this is ticketed as a single booking. Even then, if you are trying to use additional baggage allowance granted by Aadvantage status then this may not apply to the HKG-PVG flight.

If you have to reclaim, 2 hours is doable but tight (I have done it!). I would aim for 2.5 hours.

The "longest sector" rule is real, and is much easier to implement in this case than for those people flying ORD-PVG-<random place in China on different airline>.

ETA: The OP might need to be prepared to document the rule in question, but I'm guessing the check-in agents won't bat an eye.
