Question 100-120/night in Shanghai?

Hello,

I'm expecting to be in Shanghai in the 3rd week of August. Where's highest quality place to stay for 100-120 per night? Would not like any hostel or motel type setting.

We'll be doing a few things:

-Exploring Shanghai
-Expo 1 Day
-Day trip to Suzhou
-Trip to Hangzhou
-A trip to a harbor town.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

100-120 USD? Do you want to be in the downtown of Shanghai (around People's Square)? I think you can get around 800-900CNY (about 120-130 USD) for either Howard Johnson Plaza Shanghai or Central Hotel Shanghai. One is 4-1/2 star, and the latter is 4 star. We have stayed in Howard Johnson before, and it's a good solid 4 star hotel. My friend also recommends Central as a backup choice. You should be able to book them or other hotel on Ctrip, or expedia.

August is a peak holiday time, & travel to the expo is heavy.
use Ctrip & look for the Shanghai deals, which may include a few apartments for a weekly stay.

Check out the Binlong Business Hotel on elong.net. It's a boutique hotel, located near the Bund. I've stayed there several times and I think it's great.

Try the JinJiang Tower (NOT one of the other JinJiang properties). It should be in your price range, and is quite nice -- a Chinese 4 or 5 star property (I don't remember which now) with very, very few westerners. I've stayed there a few times and enjoyed it.

JinJiang Tower, should be about $150/night.

Excellent location for boutique shopping and dining. Close to Puxi Expo site.
Might be some issues with the service there, but that can be overlooked.

We've always gotten good service there. Perhaps not the same as a 5-star western chain hotel but, as I mentioned, this is a Chinese hotel and primarily attracts Chinese business people. If I recall correctly, we've gotten rates as low as $78/night, but my wife (who is Chinese and speaks Mandarin as her primary language) arranged the bookings. I don't doubt that the rates have been upped for the Expo, though.

I feel compelled to chime in and state that I don't like any Jinjiang hotels, including the New Jinjiang. The old Jinjiang is almost bearable, but I'd take a nice room in a 168 over either.

Looks like the best I'm getting (8/23-8/29) is the:

Wyndham Bund East Shanghai
the Howard Johnson
Binlong Business Hotel

Thoughts?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned IHG's F&F, from 8/23-29, you can get an exec. room at CP for 870rmb. IC Puxi (deluxe) & HI Vista (exec. suite) is only 200rmb extra.

Its such a great bargain shopping area for fashion. You might need two rooms
to house all the booty.

Day trip by train to Suzhou doable, but an over night allows more time to explore fully. Ditto for Huangzhou.

As for harbor city? Is Shanghai not one?

>SWISSOTEL GRAND SHANGHAI, SHANGHAI for under CNY800?

I like the swissotel location too (near Jian An Temple subway station). So depends if you value location or hotel amenity more?? Also, will you plan to use subway or taxi? If you take Expo package (w/ transfer) and plan to use mainly taxi, your hotel location doesn't matter as much.

I also seconded allset2travel comments that Suzhou is doable as day trip, while will recommend Hangzhou as overnight trip (if you time permits).
