Probably just there for the convention. I will be in DEN in a few months but everything will be back to normal by then.

True, but according to the internal TSA email that I received, detecting explosives and IEDs is what they are using it for.
The machine featured in the link is not the machine being used. That is a very crudely designed "copy" that may or may not perform the same function.

Most likely no, but that's not my department so I can't say for sure.. The OP asked what the contraption was and an internal email that I read today happened to provide the answer to his question.
