Tells me that taxpayers are paying for an overstaffed agency.

Ah, yes, the pastoral staff, aka a 'dual purpose assistive device'. I hope they've weighed and measured it, although since the restrictions are SSI, there's no way to know in advance if the staff will be permitted or if the Pope will be required to check it.

would be pretty cool to find out it has some previously unknown security features to it!

The handy thing about checkpoint TSOs with cellphones is that they can instantly check Ebay to see the marketable value for an item they're eyeing. The bad news is that there probably isn't much of a market history for papal staffs.

I'm sure TSA won't be anywhere near the Pope but can't say the same for the folks who wish to be near him. Those are the ones TSA will be groping and abusing.
Under what authority does TSA conduct Administrative searches when no transportation interest is involved? They are not police of any kind and I suggest any search by TSA outside of a transportation venue is illegal.
Besides why search when TSA BDO's only need the briefest moment to gaze on a person to know if that person is a threat?

Serious question, eyecue: will TSA really make an exception and take his staff with him if he wants to?
From your comments on the reasons one airport used to try to confiscate Peter Mayhew's "light saber", there is no way the Pope's staff should be permitted.
Or will TSA reveal a recent unpublished rule change (like they did when a TSO helped Britney Spears take a large cup of ice chips and water past the checkpoint)?

The Pope, among various other titles, is the head of state of the Vatican City. As such, I expect that he is exempt from most forms of domestic security screening, just as any other head of state would be. (You don't see TSA officials screening Chancellor Merkel or Prime Minister Abe; you won't see them screening Pope Benedict, either.)
[EDIT: of course, I should have said Pope Francis, not Pope Benedict. *headdesk*]
