TSA K9 ??

In RDU just now, I saw a man wearing a black shirt with the words "TSAK9" on the back of it. He was walking a dog around, smelling everything.
I wasn't aware that TSA now had dogs. I've seen other law enforcement with them, but never TSA.

It's been discussed. They've been around for a while now, although my understanding is that they're explosive detection dogs assigned to checked baggage and cargo. I've seen a TSA K-9 and handler before, but just once.

Good story about the GAO questioning their use from a few months ago (it also states they started using them in 2008 for cargo)

Wow. Even their dogs are poorly trained and not evaluated!

Dogs are capable of being trained to selectively detect explosives (unlike whole body scanners, which cannot be fixed for their lack of specificity). Therefore, they should be a good addition to airport security. Unless, of course, they are trained by TSA standards...

The best part of the USAToday stories and the logic of TSA--GAO reports TSA has no plan or protocol for what to do if the K9 did actually find explosives.

Would be interesting to test the premise.

Sorry, but I had to fix that for ya.

TSA is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be, anything remotely resembling a law enforcement agency of any kind.

In the last thread I linked, according to Pup7, a FTer who was a dog handler/trainer in the USAF, dogs are never "cross-trained" for both drugs and explosives. It's always one or the other. Once a drug dog, always a drug dog, and same for explosives detection.

So you should never have a TSA canine trained for explosives alerting just on drugs, unless there are other scents mixed in.
