LGA Checkpoint X-Ray Catches Fire
Glad to see the TSA is maintaining the x-ray equipment properly.
People were sent scrambling without their shoes when an x-ray machine caught on fire at LaGuardia Airport.
It happened late Sunday afternoon at Terminal C. It resulted in plenty of smoke, confusion, delayed flights and some very long lines.
An electrical fire in the x-ray machine took it out just before 5:00 p.m.
One passenger said, "It was scary. My first thought was why is it so foggy in here?"
That fog was actually smoke, so the Port Authority decided to evacuate the 600 people in the terminal. And if you ask some of passengers I the Terminal, it happened fast.

"Sir, what I'm going to need you to do for me is to go ahead and put your bag through the xray machine, sir.
But it's on fire.
Sir, this is a standard security procedure, sir. If you'd like to fill out a comment card they're available on the other side of the screening area, sir. So if you can just go ahead and put your bag in the machine, sir..."

I have to wonder what sorts of toxic fumes are generated by an electrical fire inside an X-ray machine.
(I'm well aware that most do not use radioactive materials for their X-ray source, but large capacitors, transformers, and other components contain chemicals that're almost as nasty.)

Does anyone know anymore about this incident?
The reason I ask is because - if you see my previous postings - I am unhappy about Backscatter X-Ray machines being used, especially on children in the UK.
Can anyone confirm it really was a Backscatter X-Ray machine that caught fire?
I would consider that a significant incident.

An X-Ray machine did not catch fire. There was sparking in a power outlet in the checkpoint. Police used dry chemical extinguishers causing the smoke condition. There wasn't an actual fire. The equipment in the area was shut down until the circuit was isolated. The outlet was repaired and equipment put back into service.
