How do you reason with "anything for security" folks?

Though lately I've been having great fun debating TSA with various DHS officials I occasionally work with. Not one of them have been able to explain why we have TSA and its security theater when lax gate security had nothing to do with 9/11. When faced with that dilemma, they either change the subject or walk away.
