Newest threat to planes: thermoses

Passengers may observe additional security measures related to insulated beverage containers. TSA is carefully monitoring information related to terrorist tactics and working with our international partners to share information and security best practices.

The possible tactics terrorists might use include the concealment of explosives inside insulated beverage containers, so in the coming days, passengers flying within and to the U.S. may notice additional security measures related to insulated beverage containers. While such items are not being banned from travel, TSA Officers have been trained to detect a variety of threats including the concealment of explosives in common items.

edit to add: On second thought, TSA may be referring to thermoses, not mugs?

CNN has an article here on this. From that article it looks like they are talking about insulated beverage contains, such as Thermoses and insulated reusable drink containers.

Thermoses contain liquids.

And liquids have been evil for years.

TSA - Continuing the war on an entire state of matter.

FriendlySkies Dec 23, 2010 8:36 pm

wow.

What can they come up with next? Is there proof that a terrorist will try to use a thermos/travel mug to blow up a plane???

And the Secret Service wrestled the insulaled beverage container to the ground.

Followed by the tv remote...

Followed by a fifty cent piece...

Followed by the cigar humidor...

Followed by...

Followed by...

How long until the TSA starts worrying about the wheels on bags, insulated coats and gloves in the same way as they are worrying about insulated cups/mugs/containers?

And, they chose to update the website for THIS, and not medical devices?

Oh, mine - wow, guess they will have to ban them from being sold inside the airport gift shops & stores  and then being taken onboard with the potential of being a WMD itself, or for concealing .... whatever

Now, what about inbound flights from abroad - these clowns would add them to the security checklist at the departure gates too :( and expect/insist/really believe that security operations at oversea airports will follow and do this too ....

The madness will soon reduce us to a minimal-sized non-insulated 3 oz. cup suitable for baby feeding .... perhaps limited to that of paper constructions only so that nothing can be hidden in the thin walled linings ??

Somehow, I get this really, really sick feelings that "they" are trying not to laugh loudly deep inside their caves about America losing the "war on terror" with this ongoing security theater circus. :o

Saitek Dec 23, 2010 10:06 pm

because their seeing what they can get away with.

why would 'they' not be laughing? To use our vernacular - 'they' are cakking their daks... (laughing so hard that they suffer a bowel mishap).

Coming up next.....sippy cups!

A vacuum bottle has a space between the outer shell and the inner bottle. Something could be inserted in that space. It would no longer be a vacuum bottle, but could become a bomb.

Given that it IS the TSA, I expect that there will be a crackdown on thermi, mugs (insulated, paper, ceramic, whathaveyou), those plastic sports bottles, drinking glasses (well, they're practically the same as mugs;)) , eyeglasses (practically the same as drinking glasses ), ...

That's where I went. The special-training is probably to look for breaks in the glue/sonic-welding, in case someone tries to replace the insulation with some other material. So if you have a favorite mug that's split and you've glued together... expect special attention.

Y'know TSA, you could have been proactive and actually purchased better x-ray machines long ago to thwart this supposed threat.

Instead, you decided to purchase three new sets of uniforms for your screeners, lifetime achievement awards and waste millions in the flawed R&D of the puffer device. Deeming all of those more important than x-ray machines.

Your own SOP states the x-ray machines cannot detect all gauges of wires.

When will you get serious about actual security?
