Just wondering, if bringing liquid through security has already been *proven* to be dangerous, why are people bringing thermoses through? Or is it to fill with evil coffee post-security?

In my case it's because I'm likely traveling on business travel and I would prefer to be green and reuse a thermos of some sort each day rather than use a disposable cup at the local Starbucks. It's the same reason I bring a water bottle with me, so I can have water at the client site w/o having to buy a bottled water every day.
Now, if I bring a really big (but empty) water bottle, but filled with drops of water, do I have to prove that the aggregate water in the there is less than the maximum allowed :D |

Nah, they'll just make you voluntarily dispose of it. After all, DY...T? |

I have been traveling with an empty Starbucks thermos for the past 10 years. I always purchase a soft drink with ice on "the other side" and fill my thermos. I am currently looking to find a clear insulated mug of some sort that TSA can see through. Amazing how often I have to purchase new items to replace "hazardous" items in my last 10 years of business traveling.

There're fewer flying :D thermos in the past few days at many East Coast airports (especially LGA, JFK & EWR) from the resulting blizzard & massive flight cancellations - so TSA can claimed the indirect results of a safer sky for the travelers, keeping the terrorists away too, etc.
I heard a rumor that someone is re-designing a clear plastic, double-walled insulated themrmos for possible TSA certification as "fit to fly" as it would be easier to inspect it for anything hidden (liquid, gas, gel, C4, etc.) - "checkpoint friendly, huh ??" Besides, in case of a thermo explosion, the plastic will melt and/or pose minimal sharpnel damages, unlike metals. Hey, that's a nice business idea - could become the standard product for sale at extra costs at McDonalds, Starbucks airside in the terminals. :p Actually, I have one of the clear ones by Hamiton Beach (Stay or Go) thermos - it really doesn't insulate all that well, okay for cold ones but I think it will melt with hot liquids (beside, need to check to see if it has BPA) .... |

A vacuum bottle has a space between the outer shell and the inner bottle. Something could be inserted in that space. It would no longer be a vacuum bottle, but could become a bomb.
My laptop has a space between... My suitcase has a space between... My camera has a... My mouth has a... My pants pocket has a... Perhaps we should just ban flying. |

As a Domestic Extremist I have decided to go the opposite route. As part of this year's Christmas stocking stuffer collection at Target (the little gadgets they sell in red boxes for around $9.99) a digital travel mug was offered, complete with a plug to keep the contents warm! This mug is serious business. It has a digital clock, myriad buttons, and an outlet where you can plug it into the cigarette lighter of your car to keep the contents warm. I can only imagine what that thing looks like on x-ray screens to highly trained:rolleyes: professionals:rolleyes: who have received additional training:rolleyes: to detect this new threat:rolleyes:. If you hurry, you may still be able to find one at your local Target. As part of post-Christmas clearance. It would be $5.00 plus tax. |

Let's see, shall we put one in the checked luggage, just to be sure - along with one in the carry-ons. :p For good measures, this will keep my spare batteries together and duct tape them for safety  - velco together the usb charging cables in case they want to do a visual inspection. ;) This will help with the flow of the security as it pass thru the x-ray, and move the lines along. I think I will keep my 3 oz/100 gram alcohol-based hand sanitizer in the 1-Qt. ziplock bag along with other gels as required for checkpoint inspection however, and, not purposely create the wrong ideas in their mind. |
for christmas, i got a couple of "freezer mugs" -- thick plastic mugs with insulating crystals in a hollow layer between the outside and inside. really expected these to get a thorough look.. (i even took out my kippie bag, to avoid leaving too much of interest in the duffel.) but, the conveyor belt didn't even slow down for that bag.... (got a roped off MMW, too. TSA in full nice-for-the-holidays mode...)

The Target mug sounds like a "fun" item to keep in the luggage when I have plenty of time to go through security. I will look for the mug....but it won't be one I would drink from. :)
I have learned to pull my empty thermos from the bag and place it in a bin. It is always in a gallon Ziploc bag....to keep it from the dirty bin and the smurf's dirty gloves. Once of the "other side" I have a clean thermos. But when I leave for business travel I am always flying out of PHX and want to have a clean thermos that insulates well to put ice in. Maybe it is living in the desert, but I am addicted to ice. So it is important to me to find another thermos or insulated container that the TSA can look at through a Ziploc bag and not swab, touch, or otherwise defile it. |
