Downgrade after upgrading

Background: I upgraded a chase freedom card about four months ago to the reserve card. Since the annual fee is based on the old card’s anniversary date, I was just charged the sapphire reserve annual fee.

I have already used the $300 travel credit, am I able to downgrade and have the annual fee reversed, or do I need to wait a year? I asked a representative and they said I could downgrade without any repercussion, but I don’t trust them and don’t want any unwarranted problems with Chase.

The reason for the downgrade is because I just got the business reserve and wanted to minimize overlapping benefits.

thanks

Consensus is that it’s not recommended because of what Chase MIGHT do but I don’t think there are enough datapoints for an accurate answer, depends on your personal risk tolerance. I personally see it as a roll of the dice and I personally have had many Chase (and AmEx) rolls without repercussions.

ok thanks for the feedback. No need to roll the dice to save a few $$ then. Chase is too important to the game.

did some tradeline and things back in the day that I regret so guess it’s a lesson learned.

Reads good. Hopefully a relatively inexpensive lesson, particularly if you can take advantage of some of the (possibly overlapping) benefits.

Agree. With Chase (and/or AmEx) being #1 and/or #2 in this game, excellent examples of “don’t poop where you eat”* .

(* “The idiom "don't sh-- where you eat" generally means that you should not cause trouble or engage in inappropriate behavior in a place or situation where you regularly depend on for your livelihood, income, or well-being. It's often used as a warning against the dangers of workplace romances.”)
SPN Lifer and eh9 like this.
