Merchants in the gas stations category sell automotive gasoline that can be paid for either at the pump or inside the station and may or may not sell other goods or services at their location. Merchants that do not specialize in selling automotive gasoline are not included in this category; for example, truck stops, boat marinas, oil and propane distributors, and home heating companies.

Merchants in the car rental agencies category rent vehicles for the purpose of driver and passenger transportation. Car rentals not booked directly with the car rental agency will not qualify; for example, car rentals purchased through travel agencies, discount travel sites, vacation clubs, tour operators, or as part of a package offered by merchants such as cruise lines and railways. Merchants that provide RV rentals or vehicle rentals for the purpose of hauling are not included in this category. Qualifying car rental agency purchases made through Chase Ultimate Rewards® will only earn a total of 5%.

Merchants in the movie theaters category show motion pictures to an audience, including at drive-in theaters. Theaters that provide live entertainment and merchants that sell and rent movies or provide movie subscription or streaming services are not included in this category. Purchases other than your tickets will not be included in the category unless they classify as a movie theater; for example, in theatre dining, food and beverage, or merchandise purchases.

Merchants in the Select Live Entertainment category sell tickets for in-person entertainment such as major sporting events, zoos and aquariums, concerts, theatrical productions, museums, tourist attractions and exhibits, amusement parks, circuses, carnivals, bands, and entertainers. Ticket agencies selling on behalf of the entertainment venue are included. Some merchants that sell tickets for in-person entertainment are not included in this category; for example, movie theaters, bowling alleys, horse racing tracks, casinos, and dance hall/clubs. Purchasing from a hotel/concierge is not included nor excursions or purchases as part of a travel package.

This is not my experience. Large regional chains have guidelines and they are followed. Most will not allow VGCs to be purchased with a credit card. However, other merchant GCs may not suffer the same indignity and that is a variable that is station dependent.

This of course leads to people who do find the unicorn gas station that does allow VGC purchases to keep that information to themselves.

This might vary chain/franchise?

For example there are many 7/11 gas stations near me. The only one that will take cards is the one down the road from million dollar mansions, no others will. Same thing with QuickChek. I have no problem buying at the one in the wealthy area, but the others will not take cards.

Coincidentally the only Walmart in the area that will take VGC for money orders is right near that QuickChek.

I haven't tried it on a Freedom card this quarter but did use them for Universal Tickets a few months ago on my CSR and it coded as travel; Merchant type: Travel agencies and tour operators.

Thanks....UndercoverTourist.com will likely NOT qualify for 5x as Select Live Entertainment.

I guess I'll take a chance and be a DP.
Update: Shin Lim tickets booked directly online via MGM eligible for 5x. Tickets posted as "Shin Lim Tickets". Note, tickets were delivered from Ticketmaster.com.

I'm assuming items purchased at Disney qualify not just theme park tickets?

No.

I have only seen this at Universal (Hollywood specifically) where the entire park was under the Amusement/Theme Park category. At Disney, each terminal is given a unique MCC. If you badly need 5 percent on in-park spend, then you have to buy a gift card at one of the few open ticket booths and use that in the park.

I just noticed that my Disneyland Annual Pass monthly payment coded as Bills & Utilities, and did not get 5x.

My passes expired at the end of October and I should be able to renew them (pay all at once) end of Sept. I think I am going to try to see if that qualify 5X when it is not on a monthly payment plan.

No issues using credit for small gift card transactions at multiple 7-Eleven locations (under $25...). Gas prices are so high I don't really need much in the way of gift cards to max out this quarter.

Was told at Quik Stop cash only (no debit or credit) and system supposedly blocks it.

Keep meaning to try Maverik... Maverik has self checkout also.

Was told at Jacksons Food Stores could only buy the Chevron gift card with credit any other gift card is cash or debit only.

Also suggest trying Pilot/Loves. Fuel desk. Have not tried this round but did in the past.

FYI - I have a reservations at Disney World resorts (hotel and tickets package). When I did a test payment, it came out as travel, rather than live entertainment category. Description of charge "Disney Resorts - WDTC".

I hate to buy $1500 worth of Disney gift cards at a gas station.

Ticket upgrade purchases through the app coded as entertainment for me. So if you were adding extra days, park hopper, water park, etc. that should work. Genie+ also coded as entertainment. Maybe it's possible to reduce the number of park tickets with your resort reservation and then add them back through the app?

Had a car rental in Calgary that I accidentally charged to my employers card. Trying to switch and weighing whether to use the AmEx Green or a Freedom. Will the fact that it was from Avis in Canada mean I'll pay a FTF? If so it's an easy choice to just go Green.
